Nima Safei is expanding his restaurant family. 40 Dean Street has a little sister at 64 Old Compton Street right around the corner. Same attitude, familiar atmosphere and style for those looking for something smaller and cosier.
The Concept
Imagine a family-style fine dining restaurant with traditional Italian cuisine and a lot of fun. Nima Safei executed an even more cosy and cheerful place for Italian food lovers. He said, “40 is the urbane older brother who’s been around for a while and knows where the party’s at, while 64 is the cool little sister who’s new on the scene but intends to make her presence felt. I hope people will love them equally!”
Location and Atmosphere
Located in the heart of Soho, almost halfway between Leicester’s Square and Piccadilly Circus, 64 Old Compton can’t be missed, positioned in the middle of this bustling street.
The modern and a little mischievous red door is seen from far away inviting folks to have a bright gastronomic experience. Through the window, you can catch a glimpse of the visitors inside, enjoying a menu of simple but perfectly executed Italian dishes. A note of mischief in the exterior (and in the interior as well) comes from a reference to the famous New York club Studio 54.
Inside, a familiar navy blue interior awaits, giving a touch of decadence to the restaurant. Small tables help to preserve the intimacy of the atmosphere. The walls are lavishly decorated with plates and small paintings reminding us that this is a family-run business.
The Food
The menu is replete with names pleasantly familiar to connoisseurs of Italian cuisine. The freshly cooked selection of pasta is really authentic. Pappardelle with rich beef ragu, silky and creamy spinach ravioli, fluffy gnocchi with buffalo mozzarella and linguine with shrimps look especially seductive. For discerning foodies, there are also dishes with a touch of luxury. Pizza with truffle and mushrooms and spaghetti with clams are highlights.
A classic tiramisu with a pistachio twist and equally traditional affogato with amaretto and vanilla ice cream will help to finish the dinner on a sweet note.
Drinks
Expect classic cocktails, as well as original cocktails as well as a wonderful selection of Italian vintage wines.
64 Old Compton Street is worth checking out if you are in Soho as this is a great people watching spot with superb food, fun interiors and a proper Italian experience.
