Japan is at the top of our travel list for many reasons. We want to discover what this amazing country has to offer from the nature in Mishima (at the brand new Fujisan Mishima Tokyu Hotel) to the bustle of downtown Tokyo.
Before travelling, you can now take in the scents of Japan with Kyoto Candle Company. We had a chat with owner Rohan Malhotra to talk about these rather unique candles which centre around 10 distinctive scents inspired by Japan.
Out of all the places in the world, why did you choose Kyoto?
I have always been an avid traveller. I visited Japan in 2017 for the first time and fell in love with Kyoto – to me it is the most magical place on earth. I have always admired and respected Japanese traditions, heritage, history and visual arts. If culture were the currency of civilisation then I believe Japan has the biggest bounty to offer.
Tell us how the idea how was conceived
From all of our senses, I believe the olfactory is most transcendental. It has the ability to evoke distant memories, transport us to different corners of the world and make us feel a range of emotions.
One day as I was nostalgically looking through photos of my trip to Japan, I tried to distinguish what struck me most about them and it was the smell. Kyoto Candle Company is wholly inspired by the culture and aromas of Japan – a place where spirituality and modern living blend perfectly.
Sounds like you have a good nose. Whats your favourite perfume?
It changes all the time. I often mix different perfumes together and these days I find myself wearing a combination of Jo Malone’s Dark Amber & Ginger Lily and their Oud & Bergamot.
What makes your candles different? Tell us about some of the ingredients that go into your candles?
Our uniquely Japan inspired candles blend organic and ethically sourced ingredients to create unique sensory experiences, which can help you find balance in your life.
Ethically, We ensure that everyone involved in the process of making our products, from suppliers to the artisans who hand pour our candles, are well provided for and any potential environmental and social impacts are taken into consideration.
We are 100% organic and vegan: We believe that everything that goes into your body can have an impact on your health, regardless of whether you drink, eat or inhale it. This is why our scented candles are made with natural fragrance extracts and real essential oils making them 100% organic with soy wax and a cotton wick.
How important is the wax?
All wax is not created equal. Paraffin wax, a byproduct of the oil industry, is what several companies use to make their candles because it’s cheap and easy to work with. We use only the purest certified organic soy wax.
Tell us about the custom prayer candle and your links with Kinkaku-ji shrine in Kyoto
We believe in the power of positive vibrations, which is why with every one of our candles, you can have a personal message inscribed with your name and a special prayer on a candle lit in the Kinkaku-ji Temple in Kyoto.
How difficult was it to create a cherry blossom candle as it is such an iconic element of Japan?
Cherry blossoms are a symbolic flower of spring, a time of renewal and hope. This gorgeous flower not only represents the beauty of life, but also the delicate fragility that comes with it and how fast things transpire. This is why we call this scent The Aroma of Transience. With notes of lemon, grapefruit, peach as well as jasmine and rose, the Sakura scented candle is meant to remind you to appreciate the fleeting moments of beauty in your life when they come. After a lot of hard work, we managed to perfect it with top notes of Cherry Blossom, lemon, grapefruit and peach, middle notes of jasmine and rose along with base notes of mugeut, lily on the valley and musk.
Can scented candles help people who are anxious in times like these?
Candles were the original source of sustained light. Thought to be first used by the Ancient Egyptians, they provided a valuable source of light for scholars. Centuries later, candles with added natural oils were discovered to have healing properties. Highly valued by the Romans, scented candles were used to enhance meditation and to purify energies. Modern life brings different challenges and anxieties to ancient times, but our candles infused with unique natural oils can be used to calm and harmonise unbalanced thoughts and feelings.
Tell us about the natural oils used and how they can help us?
