Authentic Japanese Cuisine in the Heart of the City
Roketsu isn’t the kind of restaurant that shouts for your attention. Tucked away in Marylebone, it whispers instead, and if you lean in, it rewards you with one of London’s most thoughtful expressions of Japanese dining.
I visited with a friend who works just around the corner, a regular of the area and a self-confessed lover of all things Japanese. From the moment we stepped inside, there was a shared sense that Roketsu understands something fundamental- quiet confidence is underrated.

An Immersive Dining Experience
At its heart, Roketsu is about Kappo style, the traditional multi-course Japanese cuisine that follows the principles of seasonality, balance, and flow. Kappo itself simply means to “cut and to cook”, implying a degree of interaction with the chef.
The interior reflects that philosophy beautifully. Clean lines and warm woods are bathed by soft lighting. Nothing feels accidental, nothing feels excessive. It’s calm without being austere, elegant without trying too hard. One doesn’t come here to spectate theatrical tricks or plates designed purely for Instagram, but rather to eat, slow down, and pay attention.

When Produce Speaks for Itself
The menu unfolds gently, each course building on the last. A delicate opening of seasonal vegetables set the tone; Impeccably cut, lightly dressed, and allowing the fresh produce to shine rather than be drowned out.
The first dish that we set eyes on established the ambiance for our evening- the Mushroom Forest, one of the most exuberant dishes I’ve come across in a long time. The entire bench collectively gasped as it was placed down in front of us.
The raw dishes were a highlight. Fish sliced with precision and care, treated with respect. The food quality was impeccable, but what stood out was the judgment: when to add acidity, how to achieve the ideal degree of umami, and when to simply leave the produce alone. A dish of sashimi paired with subtle garnishes felt almost meditative.
Warm courses followed, including seared fish and braised cuts of meat. Nothing was overworked. Sauces were light but deeply flavoured, broths clear yet packed with richness. One dish stood out in particular – the wagyu beef in the grill section of the menu. We paused mid-conversation, the universal sign of something done properly.
Desserts stayed true to the ethos. Vibrantly presented sorbets to top the night off, mango being the highlight.

The Sake Speciality
Roketsu’s diverse sake offering deserves praise in themselves. This isn’t a token list added for credibility; it’s carefully curated and clearly loved. We were guided through a selection of options, each of which was clearly explained and remarkably flavourful.
The sakes were elegant, food-friendly and quietly expressive. One in particular, served slightly chilled, paired beautifully with the raw courses, enhancing rather than overpowering. My friend, who doesn’t usually go out of his way to do so, was so impressed he praised the restaurant, which I did not take lightly.

Dining With Purpose at Roketsu
What makes Roketsu special isn’t just the technical skill, though there’s plenty of that; it’s the sense of purpose. Every element feels intentional. The pacing, the service, and the atmosphere all dynamically work together to create a cohesive experience that is deeply respectful of Japanese tradition, all while still feeling completely at home in London.
