There is something quietly indulgent about train travel done well. Not rushed, not functional, but considered. The kind of journey where time slows down slightly, where the landscape becomes part of the experience, and where the small details such as a well-made coffee, a proper seat, or a thoughtfully prepared meal, begin to matter.
Avanti West Coast’s First Class offering leans into exactly that feeling. It is less about getting from A to B, and more about how you arrive.
Before You Even Board

The experience begins long before the train pulls away. At stations including London Euston, Manchester Piccadilly and Glasgow Central, First Class lounge access offers a moment to pause. Inside, the pace changes. There is good coffee, a selection of pastries and light bites, and a calm atmosphere that feels distinctly separate from the main concourse.
A warm porridge bowl, flaky pastries or a simple yoghurt with fruit are quietly reassuring choices before departure, alongside barista-made coffees and a well-stocked drinks selection. There is also a lot to be said about the practicality: reliable WiFi, comfortable seating and charging points. It is a space designed not to impress loudly, but to settle you into the rhythm of the journey ahead.
More Than Just a Seat

Once onboard, the difference is immediate. First Class on Avanti is built around space. Wider seats, generous legroom and, crucially, a guaranteed table at every seat create a sense of ease that is often missing from modern travel. Whether you are working, reading, or simply watching the countryside unfold, the environment supports it.
Plug sockets sit within easy reach, WiFi is included, and there is a dedicated host who manages the carriage with attentiveness. Nothing feels rushed, and nothing feels overlooked. It is a kind of comfort that feels thoughtful rather than excessive.
Service That Feels Effortless
One of the more understated luxuries is the service itself. Food and drink are brought directly to your seat, removing the usual interruptions of train travel. There is no need to queue, no balancing act with trays, just a steady, seamless flow of service that allows you to remain settled. It is this detail, more than anything, that shifts the journey. You are not navigating the experience, instead, it comes to you.
A Menu Rooted in Place

The food offering is where Avanti distinguishes itself. Rather than relying on generic catering, the menus are shaped by producers along the West Coast route. Independent bakeries, dairies and distilleries all play a part, creating a menu that feels distinctly regional rather than standardised. Breakfast might begin with smoked Scottish salmon paired with softly scrambled eggs, or a classic British grill with bacon, sausage and tomato. For something lighter, there are Belgian waffles with berry compote and yoghurt sourced from Lancashire’s Little Town Dairy.
As the day moves on, the menu becomes more expansive. A bangers and mash with onion gravy offers something comforting and familiar, while a delicately spiced Indian-inspired salad introduces a more contemporary note. A standout is the return of the steak and Tilting Ale pie, a British beef slow-cooked in a deeply savoury ale sauce and encased in golden shortcrust pastry. Even the cheese board (a trio of British cheeses with chutney, fruit and crackers) reflects a careful curation of regional producers. Desserts are indulgent but subtle, such as the apple and blueberry crumble with clotted cream, or the handcrafted shortbread made just a short distance from the railway line. Each dish feels chosen with intention, rather than simply added to fill a menu.
Drinks with a Local Story

The drinks selection follows the same philosophy. English sparkling wines and European varietals sit alongside locally crafted spirits and beers. A standout is the Avanti-exclusive gin, distilled with botanicals foraged from Macclesfield Forest, offering something that feels both distinctive and connected to the landscape outside the window.
The Lakes Distillery vodka brings a softer, rounded profile, shaped by the purity of Lake District water, while guest beers from independent breweries rotate regularly, keeping the offering fresh and rooted in the route. We tried a First Class IPA whcih was fruity and zingy, an exclusive golden ale brewed by Titanic Brewery in Stoke-on-Trent for Avanti West Coast. Even non-alcoholic options are treated with the same level of care, from kombucha to artisan soft drinks, alongside a solid range of teas and freshly brewed coffee. It is less about volume of choice and more about the quality behind it.
Sourced Along the Route

What ties everything together is the emphasis on locality. Producers such as Joseph Heler Cheesemakers, Little Town Dairy and a range of independent bakeries and brewers form the backbone of the menu. Many are family-run, with long histories and a strong connection to their regions.
This approach does more than elevate the food. It creates a narrative, one where the journey itself becomes part of the dining experience, with each dish reflecting the places the train passes through. It is a subtle detail, but one that adds depth.
A Different Kind of Travel
Luxury in travel often leans towards the dramatic, for instance, grand hotels, far-flung destinations, the sense of escape. What Avanti West Coast offers is something quieter. A journey that feels composed, thoughtful and unhurried. And perhaps that is what makes it memorable. Because sometimes, the most considered journeys are not about where you are going, but how you choose to get there.
