The Glenlivet is more than just a whisky; it is a symbol of tradition and quality. Known as the “single malt that started it all,” it has captivated the hearts of whisky lovers around the world. This September, the distillery introduced an extraordinary creation that showcases its mastery in whisky production and design, embodying the spirit of innovation that has characterised the brand since its foundation in 1824: The Glenlivet Eternal Collection, First Edition, 55 Year Old, developed in partnership with computational architect Michael Hansmeyer.

Speyside, a hidden gem in Scotland, boasting breathtaking landscapes, rich culture, and world-renowned whisky was the backdrop for the unveiling of The Eternal Collection at an exclusive celebration commemorating The Glenlivet’s 200th anniversary at its iconic distillery in Speyside.
The Glenlivet Eternal Collection’s First Edition, featuring the 55-year-old whisky, marks the beginning of a new series of collectable whiskies to be released annually. Each subsequent edition will mature for an additional year and will be accompanied by original artwork from a different visionary artist, forming a collection that whisky lovers will cherish.

This year’s exquisite release represents The Glenlivet’s oldest and most inspiring offering yet and is limited to a mere 100 meticulously crafted bottles. In collaboration with the visionary artist Michael Hansmeyer, the 55-year-old whisky is encased within a stunning hand-crafted jesmonite and rose gold sculpture inspired by the natural beauty surrounding the distillery. The design echoes the eternal flow of the River Livet, nestled in the heart of Spey Valley, where the whisky house originated. This piece exemplifies contemporary modelling techniques through computer programming, highlighting the intricate craftsmanship that defines The Glenlivet’s creations.
The Glenlivet has a fascinating history that dates back to 1824 when George Smith founded the distillery in the remote Scottish Highlands. This early establishment of a legal distillery was significant because it marked the beginning of Scotland’s single malt whisky industry. The Glenlivet was the first distillery to gain a license, which allowed it to produce high-quality whisky legally. This rich history not only adds to its charm but also showcases the dedication and passion that has been passed down through generations, none more so than in the 55-year-old expression.

But what does drinking pure history in a bottle taste like?
Each element of this release has been thoughtfully designed, with a focus on precision and detail. The whisky, aged in a seasoned sherry cask for over fifty years, delivers a rich and intricate flavour profile. The careful selection of these casks ensures that The Glenlivet delivers a unique taste, making it a true masterpiece of craftsmanship.
The aroma reveals the warmth of autumn fruits, with the gentle sweetness of poached pears harmonising with the lively citrus notes of sun-ripened Seville oranges, grounded by rich sticky dates. This is complemented by roasted hazelnut and the indulgent depth of dark chocolate, culminating in the enveloping spices of cinnamon and nutmeg.
On the palate, deep flavours of homemade blackcurrant jam, vanilla fudge, and dark chocolate emerge, balanced by zesty orange and crystallised ginger, finishing with a hint of warming clove spice. The finish is remarkably long, and complex, and evolves through a medley of fruit and spices, concluding with a subtle warm, dry, and spicy note.

To further celebrate its bicentennial, The Glenlivet has partnered with Sotheby’s to present a unique auction lot. A bespoke 55-year-old single malt whisky, accompanied by a one-of-a-kind Hansmeyer sculpture, will be available exclusively at auction from October 22 to November 5, 2024, with proceeds supporting the National Trust for Scotland, dedicated to preserving Scotland’s natural and cultural heritage.
This is not just a whisky; it represents a rich history, exceptional craftsmanship, and an unforgettable flavour experience. The dedication to quality and tradition sets it apart from other whiskys on the market. The distillery deserves recognition as a true leader in the whisky industry. For those who appreciate quality spirits, trying a bottle of The Glenlivet is a journey worth taking.

The Glenlivet also offers a range of expressions, from the classic 12-year-old to the more complex 18-year-old, catering to different tastes and preferences. This variety ensures that there is a perfect bottle for every occasion. Even if you can’t get your hands on a bottle of the 55 Year Old you can always enjoy the luxury of The Glenlivet.
