Grand Velas Los Cabos is the holy grail of luxury all-inclusive experiences in Baja California Sur. Their motto is “beyond all-inclusive, beyond compare” – redefining the all-inclusive concept and by doing so at the most elevated level. This spectacular paradise has been awarded the prestigious title of AAA Five-diamond resort and really represents what an all-inclusive experience should be.
The check in experience
Arriving at the property might seem intimidating due to the colossal size, but once you enter the universe of pure luxury, you will realise the attention to detail and personality matches the size. Unlike other resorts where check-in usually occurs at the reception desk, we were whisked away to an intimate corner of the grand open-air lobby with breath taking views of the ocean to complete our registration. Within minutes, we were greeted with a glass of Veuve Clicquot and a selection of fruit caviar. From the moment we arrived it was clear that the level of hospitability was incomparable.
Our Butler
After checking in, our lovely butler Michell came to meet us. Michell arranged meal reservations and takes care of all your needs. She was always available to us as needed and checked in throughout the duration of our stay on WhatsApp and in person.
Our Ambassador Suite Ocean View Suite (no.916)
The first standout detail I noticed was that all 304 rooms are suites. Our Ambassador Suite Ocean View Suite (no.916) is truly fit for a king, spanning 1,100 square feet of all-inclusive luxury. We took in the dramatic ocean view from our own private balcony. Grand Velas’s signature style of rows of manicured vibrant pink Bougainvillea flowers on all the balconies overlook the sprawling pools leading into the ocean.
The interior is designed with comfort in mind. Modern Mexican furnishings using neutral palettes are inspired by the Baja scenery. Our suite presented TWO plush queen size beds with premium bedding, a separate lounge and work area, HD flat screen TV, espresso machine and a premium stocked mini bar. More all-inclusive treats include tequila, chocolates, wine, and even an straw tote bag for the pool or beach.
The bathroom is equally as magnificent, with a spacious layout and wooden panels that open into the bedroom. Entering the bathroom is similar to having your own personal spa (if the 35,000sq ft spa is not enough). There is a giant jetted bath, a separate rainfall shower and luxurious L’Occitane toiletries to spoil yourself. For the room key, we opted for a futuristic touch: a digital key which was downloaded via an app onto our phone – a cool and super convenient way of getting into our room.
Hotel & Facilities
First of all, all suites boast beautiful sea views. This is due to the clever design of the property. The strikingly sculpted resort is built in a sail-like design, an architectural nod to the surname of the family-owned hotel company (vela is Spanish for “sail”).
With so many facilities on the property, there’s little reason to leave. The resort offers 3 infinity pools with areas reserved for adults only. The property has an incredible 2-story 35,000-square-foot spa of pure pleasure, endless list of treatments from the Agave After-sun to Aroma Vela massages. Chic and modern design throughout the spa is a feast for the eyes, along with rich marble flooring and the use of natural lighting fills the space.
In addition, Grand Velas has one of the biggest hotel gyms in Los Cabos – personal trainers on hand and every treadmill offers beach views. There are creative activities for all ages from the kids’ club to the separate teens’ club offering the latest video games and outdoor toys.
Whether you are walking around the palm trees and bougainvillea gardens or lounging in the sun by the pool with a Margarita in hand, you will instantly get a sense of restfulness and drift away from reality. Local wildlife such as humpback whales and dolphins are common sights – make sure to listen out for the bells from the whale gong!
The Grand Velas Food Experience
Grand Velas offers two all-day restaurants, five gourmet dining restaurants, plus a coffee shop too, all included. Breakfast and lunch are served at the casual beachfront restaurant called Azul. At Azul is an endless buffet of fruit, juices, pastries, waffles, cereal, and a station for freshly made Mexican quesadillas and tacos with assorted meats, guacamole and pico de gallo. We recommend sitting outside, taking in the sea view and enjoying the breeze, as well as the chance of seeing whales and dolphins.
The service and quality are outstanding. The staff here at Grand Velas went out of their way to make sure our stay was impeccable, adapting anything to suit any of our desires like changing the green juice every morning to Mark’s taste by adding extra celery and kale – it’s the tiny details that make such an impression.
Dinner options include Frida, which is a modern gourmet Mexican restaurant with a tasting menu and a la carte. You could also eat a la carte at Lucca: a spectacular Italian and Mediterranean restaurant for all ages, or at Piaf, a French restaurant with romantic settings for adults only. There is also Velas 10, a steakhouse and seafood grill overlooking the ocean.
Cocina de Autor is the resort’s flagship restaurant. Next to the tranquil koi-pond, the adult-only space serves a 10-course tasting menu with a wine pairing which are all from vineyards within the local region and southern California, created by the two-Michelin star chef, Sidney Schutte.
For a quick bite and something more casual, try Cabrilla’s exquisite variety of ceviche and satisfy your craving for freshly caught seafood by the pool.
The Grand Velas Drinks Experience
Drinks are a great part of an all-inclusive experience but what really makes Grand Velas Los Cabos special is the very high quality of drinks available, and with five bars to choose from you are spoilt for choice. Browsing through the impressive selection of premium, local and international tequilas, we discovered the crown jewels: Clase Azul Reposado Tequila. This elusive and ultra-premium spirit is sought after by collectors and is one of the best tequilas on earth. You can fully appreciate it by sipping it neat.
To maximise your experience of Mexico’s favourite drinks, we recommend arranging a tequila and mezcal tasting in the named Tequila Mezcal Bar, with over 50 premium varieties as part of the all-inclusive rate. Grand Velas is home to one of the most extensive wine lists in Mexico, with a sommelier on hand to help guide you.
