Hux Hotel, nestled in the upscale Kensington in London, has unveiled its latest culinary venture: a contemporary British restaurant which features a lively cocktail bar and a live music lounge, poised to become Kensington’s newest hotspot for locals looking to see and be seen.
First Impressions
Dark, sexy, and wild. As I step through the door, I’m greeted by a spectacle of whimsy and wonder. The window display, adorned with a Zebra head, flamingos, and penguins, sets the tone for the eccentric ambience within. The staff, dressed in impeccable soldier uniforms, add to the allure of the place.
Inside, the atmosphere is vibrant and captivating. Tables are dressed in fine crockery and gold-dipped cutlery, while preserved monkeys dangle from the chandeliers and a towering giraffe presides over the scene. Lions and bears pose on the walls, creating a truly wild and captivating setting. The waiters are professional yet effortlessly cool, regaled us with witty banter and impeccable service, setting the stage for a memorable dining experience.
To Drink
Under the expert guidance of Bar Manager Raffaele Merola, the cocktail selection is nothing short of extraordinary. We indulged in two of his masterpieces: Fly High Loves Margaritas, a bold concoction featuring Patron Silver, Chili-infused 1800 Coconut Tequila, Ancho Reyes Verde, Wasabi Agave, and Citric Acid – a delightful blend of spice and sass that left us craving more. Next, we sampled The Parrot One, a sophisticated blend of Mezcal, Coffee-infused Campari, Chocolate Bitters, Saline solution, and House Blend vermouths – a subtle yet complex libation that set the perfect tone for the evening ahead. Here’s what we ordered.
The Food
Chef Stephen Collins’ menu offers a tantalising array of dishes, each more tempting than the last. For starters, we savoured the Dry Aged Angus Beef Steak Tartare, a wonderful blend of flavours enhanced by the chives, crisp shallots, smoked paprika oil, and a soft-boiled quail’s egg, served alongside crunchy crostini. We also delighted in the Hux Salad, a refreshing and colourful medley of quinoa, cranberries, pink grapefruit, pomegranate, and yuzu dressing – a perfect palate cleanser before the main course.
Moving on to mains, we indulged in the 28 Day Dry Aged British Rib Eye Steak, accompanied by triple-cooked chips, peppercorn sauce, roast vine tomato, and watercress salad – a satisfying combination of flavours and textures.
No meal is ever complete without a sweet finale. We indulged in the Warm Coconut Rice Pudding, served with poached berries for a delightful contract of tangy and sweet flavours, as well as the Raspberry Meringue Pavlova, accompanied by crème fraiche and raspberry compote.
