Driving through the leafy suburb of Woodhall Spa, I almost miss the turning for Bainland. Despite a large sign marking the entrance, there’s nothing ostentatious about it. Instead, it blends seamlessly into its tranquil, elegant surroundings – a fitting introduction to what lies beyond.
Bainland is the epitome of laid-back, experiential luxury, where comfort, privacy and nature take centre stage. Beyond the black wrought-iron security gates, a high-end countryside lodge retreat unfolds across a 45-acre private estate in rural Lincolnshire.
There’s an immediate sense of exhale upon arrival. The pace softens, the air feels fresher, and the gentle rustle of trees replaces the usual background hum of daily life. It’s the kind of place that encourages you to slow down without even realising it – a rare quality in today’s always-on-the-go world.

Bainland began life as a caravan park before being acquired by the Craddock family in 1999. A transformative redevelopment in 2015 saw caravans replaced with lakeside lodges, treehouse retreats and stylish villas, many complete with private hot tubs. Keen to bring the family together without waiting for a festive occasion, I gathered my multi-generational clan for a countryside escape.

One of the greatest joys of a three-generational holiday is the opportunity to properly connect—far removed from the usual distractions of everyday life. Bainland caters effortlessly to groups of all sizes, and our gated Lakeside Lodge proved the perfect setting. There’s something deeply comforting about sharing a space that still allows for privacy—where early risers can enjoy quiet mornings by the water while night owls linger by the fire pit under a canopy of stars.
The open-plan living and kitchen area opens onto a sweeping wooden deck overlooking its own private lake. It’s an idyllic space for entertaining, complete with outdoor dining, a luxury hot tub and a signature fire pit—ideal for cooking or simply soaking up Lincolnshire’s vast night skies. Wild otters are known to frequent these waters, and I held out hope of spotting one during our stay. While they remained elusive, the stillness of the lake at dawn, occasionally broken by ripples of unseen movement, was captivating enough.

Inside, the lodge is flanked by two light-filled bedrooms on either side, each featuring super king-size beds that can be configured as twins. I had anticipated some squabble over room allocation, but no one seemed particularly concerned – a testament, perhaps, to the calming atmosphere and the thoughtful interiors by designer Karen Robson. Soft, neutral tones, natural textures and carefully considered lighting create a space that feels both luxurious and entirely unpretentious.
The fully equipped kitchen includes everything needed for a self-catered stay, from oven and hob to dishwasher and double-fronted fridge, alongside all the essential crockery and utensils. While Bainland leans towards a “cook at your leisure” concept, there’s a simple pleasure in preparing meals together – something that often gets lost in the rush of everyday routines.

That said, those less inclined can head to the on-site restaurant, The Nest. With its rustic charm, stylish furnishings and soft ambient lighting, the eatery is as visually appealing as it is welcoming. Whether for a hearty breakfast, an intimate dinner or a relaxed get-together, the all-day menu caters to every appetite. During our visit, my family was thoroughly spoilt for choice – burgers, pizzas, sausage and mash, and fresh salads all made an appearance. The chorus of “oohs and ahhs” around the table spoke volumes.
The dog-friendly ethos extends even to the menu, ensuring four-legged guests are just as well catered for. Beyond the food, the bar offers a thoughtfully curated selection of wines, spirits, gins and cocktails, and truly comes alive during its live music evenings, when guests gather to mingle, and the atmosphere takes on a gentle buzz.

Nature is at the heart of Bainland, and the woodland setting lends itself to a wide array of outdoor activities. Guests can explore walking trails and cycling routes or try their hand at archery, Segways, tennis, badminton and even mini Land Rovers. For younger visitors, the adventure play area – complete with zip lines, climbing frames and balance trails – provides endless entertainment, allowing them to roam freely and safely.
As a qualified fitness instructor, I encouraged my family to embrace the activities on offer. Archery, in particular, proved an instant hit. Divided into teams, we quickly discovered a fiercely competitive streak, much to everyone’s amusement. Our instructor, Jake, kept things lively with a series of games that had us fully engaged and surprisingly determined. Laughter echoed through the woodland as friendly rivalries took hold, creating the kind of shared memories that linger long after the trip ends.

For those seeking relaxation, the spa offers a welcome retreat. An indoor heated pool, sauna and steam room provide the perfect setting to unwind. There’s a quiet luxury in slipping into a robe and taking time out, whether for a morning swim or an afternoon reset after a day of activity.
And if that’s not indulgent enough, Bainland is set to elevate its offering further with new Elemis treatment rooms, additional hot tubs and sun loungers overlooking natural landscapes, adding yet another layer of restorative escape to the experience.
Even four-legged guests are getting an upgrade, with a new enclosed dog agility course featuring jumps, tunnels and climbing elements, ensuring no member of the family is left out of the fun.

So the brief to escape to a luxury lodge retreat in quaint Lincolnshire for a family-friendly UK staycation was very much met. Gone are the days when multi-generational holidays revolved solely around board games at the table. Whether you fill your days with activity or simply soak up the surroundings, Bainland offers a refined yet relaxed escape – an understated luxury retreat with every comfort thoughtfully considered. It’s a place where time stretches, connections deepen, and the outside world feels pleasantly far away. Now that is what I call a pleasant and satisfying staycation.
