June 2023 marked the world premiere of the all-new Lexus LBX, held in Milan, the global capital of fashion and design. Luxuriate Life Magazine was invited to attend the LBX reveal, so I eagerly boarded a plane from London to Milan, excited to explore the brand’s smallest model to date.
Continuing to push boundaries and challenge the status quo, Lexus has a proud history of pioneering new thinking and innovative products. By constantly changing people’s perspectives and reshaping the luxury market, Lexus has once again redefined the concept of luxury. With its contemporary design and advanced technology, the self-charging hybrid electric LBX represents a significant milestone in the automotive industry.
The new Lexus LBX includes a 1.5 litre three-cylinder petrol-hybrid engine, CVT automatic gearbox, bi-polar nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) battery, 17 or 18-inch alloy wheels, 9.8-inch digital user interface driver display screen and Mark Levinson audio system.
LBX stands for Lexus Breakthrough Crossover, and what better way to experience its unique unveiling than in Italy’s stylish and vibrant city. As I eagerly await the event inside the renowned Superstudio Maxi, the lights dim as the show begins to hit the road.

Exterior Design
As the LBX cars make their way into the showroom, I’m impressed by their initial look and style. Each car featured bi-tone paintwork finishes (monotone options are also available), and personally, the ‘Sonic Copper/4Y5’ bi-tone caught my attention the most. The 18-inch alloy wheels add height and a sense of sturdiness to this compact SUV.
While the design elements have been developed with a more relaxed character, the sleek and aerodynamic profile has been retained, along with the smooth and flowing lines that exude the staple Lexus elegance and sophistication.
The most notable change to the exterior of this compact SUV is the new frontal arrangement. Unlike the bold and prominent grille usually seen on Lexus vehicles, the LBX introduces a more delicate finish. The seamless, frameless grille follows the lines of the LBX’s spindle body, adding to the model’s strong and dynamic stance. This new frontal arrangement creates a sporty profile, enhancing aerodynamic efficiency and featuring a distinctive headlight design.

Interior Design and Infotainment
Designed to introduce a new luxury everyday car, the LBX is based on Toyota’s GA-B architecture platform, optimising space inside the cabin. The interior design radiates simplicity and refinement, with a focus on visibility, spaciousness, and a commanding centre console.
Premium materials like semi-aniline leather and vegan-friendly options enhance the upscale feel. The driver’s cockpit follows the Tazuna concept, with intuitive controls to minimise distractions. The compact size ensures excellent visibility, while the interior provides a spacious and encompassing atmosphere. The LBX is equipped with the Lexus Link Connect system for navigation and real-time traffic, featuring voice assistant and smartphone integration.
Additional features include an optional digital key for smartphone-based access, over-the-air software updates, and an optional premium Mark Levinson audio system.

Engine and Performance
Now let’s get under the bonnet of this breakthrough SUV. The Lexus LBX features a new-generation hybrid system with a compact 1.5-litre engine. Redesigned components enhance efficiency, reduce weight, and deliver a maximum output of 134bhp/100kW and peak torque of 185Nm, enhance the driving experience.
The model includes a revamped power control unit mounted above the transaxle, contributing to a low bonnet line. The drivetrain is more compact with separate shafts for the two motor-generators, saving space.
A packed, high-performance bi-polar NiMH battery provides instant, powerful acceleration like a battery-powered electric vehicle. It also improves fuel efficiency with a redesigned cooling system for prolonged battery life and optimised performance.
Responsive handling and linear acceleration also add to an enjoyable performance. The hybrid system upgrades allow for extended all-electric driving, while the E-Four all-wheel drive enhances stability. Lexus has prioritised luxury and reduced noise and vibration through various measures, such as a balancer shaft to minimise engine vibration, damping sheets in the doors, and effective insulation in the roof.

Safety and Driver Assistance
The LBX has advanced safety features including collision detection, driver alerts, and automatic control of steering, braking, and drive force. It holds systems like Pre-Collision, Radar Cruise Control, Lane Tracing Assist, and Road Sign Assist.
Additional features include an electric door release, parking sensors, and a wet arm wiper for better visibility.

Model Range
Now more about the personality. This small chariot offers a range of design options with four atmospheres – Elegant, Relax, Emotion, and Cool. They feature different exterior designs and interior upholstery choices.
The LBX incorporates advanced technology features as standard, such as the Lexus Safety System+. Equipment options include a digital instrument display, head-up display, remote parking, Mark Levinson audio, air purification, and a power back door.

In a Nutshell
Despite being the smallest model in this premium Japanese brand’s portfolio, Lexus’s design ambition was to create a car that is more relaxed than formal in character; however, continuing to develop the customer’s needs in mind, through maintaining the offering of premium experiences.
Overall, the Lexus LBX strikes a balance between contemporary elegance and a sporty presence, combining luxury with a touch of everyday dynamism.
The LBX will enter production in late 2023. UK customers can make reservations starting in July, and orders will be accepted from October. Deliveries of the first vehicles are expected to begin in March 2024.
