What do you get if you cross a hair salon, cocktail bar and members club? SALON64 in the buzzing heart of Soho is all of these things and now the city’s hottest new private members club without those extortionate membership fees.
CLUB64 comes from the team behind SALON64, one of London’s top hair and beauty salons that prides itself on providing a luxurious safe haven for clients to unwind and indulge in cutting edge cuts and colours, all whilst enjoying stunning cocktails.
Founder and Creative Director Ricky Walters is hands on in every sense of the word: warmly greeting me at the door with his curly locks and kitted out in branded SALON64 face covering, he shows me around the beautifully designed salon, which is set over two floors. Modelled around the modern-day speak easy, CLUB64 pays homage to the very first French salon which launched in 1664 with dark woods, plus pops of colour and art deco detailing.
Moving onto my beauty station, Ricky is ready to recommend the perfect style for my post-lockdown locks which are in serious need of a little TLC. The most unique part of SALON64 is it looks more more like a cool bar than a hair salon, with no hair driers or barrel brushes in sight, but high-tech work stations that open up to reveal mirrors and consoles with phone chargers, compartments for your drink and hand sanitiser, and even a QR code to download the latest titles to safely read on your phone. It reminds me of a modern-day human jewellery box.
The stations are set into marble units around fire pits, which provide a minimalist and clean look, whilst still maintaining a cosy atmosphere. My hair is washed in a private room while I lay back and relax, safe in the knowledge my hair is en route to looking a million bucks.
Whilst Ricky goes to work on snipping off my dull tresses, he lets me in on a little secret that many of his clients achieve their thicker, desired dos by taking a daily omega 3 herring caviar supplement, which helps improve hair strength and thickness. Hearing that I could potentially grow my hair to longer than just-over-the-shoulder with regular trims plus an added supplement leaves me jumping for joy, and I decide to celebrate by ordering a cocktail.
The cocktail list is seriously impressive, and mixologist Alfie is a genius with hair inspired original creations such as the Bob, Blue Rinse, and Short Back and Sides taking centre stage. The Short Back and Sides is our Editor’s favourite. A complex, brilliant, chest hair inducing combination of Woodford Reserve, Laphroaig, vermouth and Aperol. Smoky, woody and intense.
At Ricky’s recommendation, I order one of their signature tipples – the Bob: an eclectic mix of Crème de Fraise, Frangelico, strawberry puree and cranberry juice. Although it appears the dream girly cocktail with its fruity, pink appearance, it has a gloriously nutty finish and is the perfect accompaniment to the big reveal of my new hair, which has been expertly curled into exquisitely loose beach waves, whilst maintaining thickness and movement, even though it’s now a couple of inches shorter.
To top off the high of my fresh new locks and my favourite new cocktail, Ricky tells me that now I’ve visited the salon I’m officially CLUB64’s newest member, which entities me to 20% off on all cocktails, as well as facial recognition entry to the salon, CLUB64 and TERRACE64, the brand new garden terrace area. I eagerly go onto the terrace to enjoy more of Alfie’s cocktails whilst soaking up the post lockdown Soho atmosphere.
By the end of my SALON64 and CLUB64 experience I feel truly spoilt and can’t wait to spread the word of London’s best kept secret to all of my friends, family and colleagues. The ultimate precursor to your evening, there’s only one place you can achieve Balayage, beach waves, as well as some of the finest hair-lingo’d cocktails in town.
