The Journey North
There are places that begin to change the pace of your holiday long before you arrive. Seehof Nature Retreat is one of them. Hidden away in the peaceful landscapes of South Tyrol, just a few minutes from Brixen (Bressanone), it isn’t a destination that seeks to impress through extravagance. Instead, it quietly captivates with a contemporary vision of hospitality, where wellness, nature and thoughtful attention to detail exist in perfect harmony.
The best way to arrive is to embrace the journey itself. Flying into Milan, hiring a car and making your way north towards the Dolomites transforms the transfer into an experience in its own right. Lake Garda makes for the perfect first stop: a leisurely stroll along the waterfront, an unhurried lunch, and then back on the road as the scenery gradually begins to change. Flat plains give way to vineyards, vineyards become forests, and before long the dramatic peaks of the Dolomites dominate the horizon. It’s one of those rare drives that naturally encourages you to slow down, gently preparing you for everything that awaits.

Crossing Into Stillness
Arriving at Seehof feels exactly as you would hope from a retreat that has made authenticity its defining characteristic. The welcome is warm, elegant and completely effortless. The team greets every guest with a genuine sense of ease, and the very first gesture says everything about the philosophy of the place: a cool, delicately scented towel is offered almost wordlessly, quietly inviting you to leave the journey behind and step into a completely different rhythm of life.
Within minutes, one quality becomes immediately apparent: balance.
It is something increasingly rare in luxury hospitality. Every member of the team seems to possess an intuitive understanding of when to be present and when to step back. The service is polished without ever feeling rehearsed, attentive without becoming intrusive. Rather than following rigid protocols, there is a genuine culture of hospitality built around people. Every interaction feels personal, sincere and understated. The standards are every bit as high as those found in some of the world’s finest luxury hotels, yet they retain the warmth and humanity that truly memorable stays are made of.
That philosophy appears to perfectly reflect the vision of Tamaris and Andreas Auer, whose quiet leadership can be felt throughout the property. Every detail suggests a clear intention: to create a destination where luxury isn’t expressed through excess, but through the quality of the time spent there, a deep respect for the surrounding landscape and an unwavering focus on people.

Living with the Landscape
The architecture follows exactly the same principle.
Rather than imposing itself upon the landscape, the retreat becomes part of it. Expansive floor-to-ceiling windows flood every space with natural light, while timber and local stone echo the materials of the surrounding mountains. Every room seems intentionally designed to maintain a constant dialogue with the outdoors. The lake, the forests, and the Dolomite peaks are not simply views to admire; they become an integral part of the entire experience.
The rooms reflect this same understated elegance. Sophisticated without ever feeling over-designed, they offer everything one would expect from a property of this calibre: beautifully crafted interiors, premium materials, an exceptionally comfortable bed and an overwhelming sense of tranquillity that accompanies every moment of the stay. It is the kind of room you look forward to returning to after a day exploring the mountains and one that’s surprisingly difficult to leave the following morning.
Or at least it would be…
…if it weren’t for what lies just beyond the balcony.
The view is, without question, one of Seehof’s greatest luxuries.

The private natural lake mirrors the sky with almost surreal stillness, while the heated outdoor pool appears to dissolve seamlessly into the landscape beyond. Behind it all, the Dolomites frame the entire retreat with breathtaking grandeur. It is a panorama that never truly repeats itself, changing constantly with the light, the weather and the passing hours, offering a different perspective every time you pause to look.
Yet, more than the view itself, it was its soundtrack that stayed with me.
Every morning, I would open the balcony doors a few minutes before beginning the day. My first coffee somehow tasted different accompanied by birdsong, the gentle rustling of leaves moving in the breeze and the subtle sound of water rippling across the lake. There were no passing cars, no distant traffic, no background noise competing for attention.
Only nature.
It’s remarkable how profoundly these sounds, which most of us have almost forgotten how to notice, can influence our state of mind. Within just a few days, they had become part of my morning ritual, one of those simple moments that ultimately become the strongest memory of an entire journey.
Finding Your Rhythm
Another detail that beautifully reflects the retreat’s philosophy is the way each day unfolds.
Every morning, guests are presented with a programme of experiences, ranging from wellness sessions and guided hikes to sauna rituals and carefully curated events taking place throughout the surrounding region. Rather than prescribing how you should spend your time, it serves as a gentle invitation to experience both the retreat and its surroundings with curiosity, allowing each day to develop naturally rather than according to a rigid itinerary.
Ours began in exactly the best place: the beautiful yoga studio overlooking the lake.
There, we enjoyed a private session with Patrizia, whose professionalism, knowledge and natural warmth transformed the practice into something far more meaningful than simply another wellness activity. Practising yoga while looking out across the still waters and surrounding mountains is perhaps one of the most peaceful ways imaginable to begin the day, offering a rare opportunity to slow down before setting off to explore South Tyrol.

Breakfast felt like the natural continuation of that peaceful morning.
More than simply a buffet, it is a celebration of local produce and exceptional ingredients. South Tyrolean cheeses and cured meats sit alongside freshly baked breads, artisanal yoghurts, seasonal fruit, homemade cakes, local honey, cereals and an impressive selection of house-made granolas. Guests can even create their own freshly pressed juices by choosing exactly which fruits and vegetables they’d like blended. The result is a breakfast that feels generous without excess, perfectly aligned with the retreat’s philosophy that wellbeing begins with what is placed on the table.
After breakfast, the feeling was always the same: the sense that an entire day of discovery lay ahead, knowing that, whatever adventures awaited beyond the mountains, Seehof would be there to welcome us back with exactly the same sense of peace with which it had greeted us on our arrival.
Beyond the Retreat
After such a thoughtfully prepared breakfast, Seehof reveals itself as the perfect base from which to discover South Tyrol. One of its greatest strengths is its location: secluded enough to offer complete peace and quiet, yet close to some of the region’s most captivating destinations.
Just a short drive away lies Brixen (Bressanone), one of those towns best explored without a map or a schedule. The oldest town in Tyrol, Brixen possesses a quiet elegance defined by cobbled streets, arcaded walkways, pastel-coloured façades and intimate squares where life seems to move at a gentler pace. Its magnificent cathedral and cloister form the historic heart of the town, while independent boutiques, traditional cafés and artisan bakeries invite you to linger far longer than planned. It isn’t a destination that relies on headline attractions to impress; its charm lies in simply wandering, observing and allowing its atmosphere to unfold naturally.

For those drawn to the mountains, however, Plose is an essential visit.
Within minutes, the medieval streets of Brixen give way to alpine meadows, panoramic hiking trails and dramatic peaks offering some of the finest views in the Dolomites. During the warmer months, the mountain becomes a paradise for walkers, cyclists and outdoor enthusiasts, while those looking for something a little more exhilarating can experience the MountainCart, a three-wheeled downhill ride that combines spectacular scenery with just the right amount of adrenaline. Plose has that rare ability to satisfy every kind of traveller, whether you’re seeking adventure or simply hoping to sit outside a traditional mountain hut with a glass of wine and an unforgettable view.
And perhaps that’s exactly what makes a stay at Seehof so rewarding: the effortless balance between exploration and restoration.

The Art of Wellbeing
After a day spent wandering historic towns or hiking through alpine landscapes, returning to the retreat feels almost ceremonial.
The spa is undoubtedly one of the property’s finest achievements. Elegant, light-filled and beautifully integrated into its natural surroundings, it encourages you to slow down from the moment you step inside. The heated outdoor pool overlooking the lake is perhaps where the relationship between architecture and nature is expressed most beautifully. Swimming while your eyes drift between forests, mountains and reflections dancing across the water is an experience both wonderfully simple and deeply restorative.
The wellness offering extends far beyond the facilities themselves.
Multiple saunas, steam rooms and relaxation areas provide countless opportunities to unwind, but what truly distinguishes Seehof is the way these spaces are brought to life. Every day, guests can take part in a programme of guided wellness rituals designed to showcase the healing qualities of natural ingredients while transforming the traditional sauna into a genuinely immersive sensory experience.

Of all of them, the aromatherapy ritual was the one that left the greatest impression on me.
The essential oils are created using flowers and aromatic herbs grown directly on the property, then carefully incorporated throughout the ceremony. As the fragrances gradually fill the sauna, the experience becomes about far more than warmth alone. It engages your breathing, your senses, and your awareness in a way that feels almost meditative. It’s one of those moments that quietly remind you that true wellbeing doesn’t necessarily come from elaborate treatments, but often from the authenticity of the simplest experiences.
Then comes one of the most memorable moments of the entire wellness journey.
The plunge into the alpine lake.
The water is undeniably cold, and your first instinct is to hesitate. But then you step in, remain there for a few seconds, and slowly make your way back towards the comforting warmth of the spa. The contrast is intense, invigorating and surprisingly addictive. Rather than feeling like a challenge to overcome, it becomes an opportunity to awaken every sense and reconnect with your body in an entirely different way.
Our afternoon concluded with one of the finest massages I’ve ever experienced.
The treatment, delivered by Ilaria, perfectly reflected the exceptional standards of the wellness centre. With remarkable sensitivity and professionalism, she adapted the massage entirely to what my body needed that day, finding a flawless balance between therapeutic technique and gentle relaxation. It was one of those treatments whose effects linger long after you’ve left the spa, leaving behind an unmistakable feeling of lightness that accompanied me well into the evening.

A Table Shaped by Nature
If wellness is the heart of Seehof, then gastronomy is its natural counterpart.
From the very first dinner, the retreat’s culinary philosophy becomes immediately clear: celebrating South Tyrol through seasonal, ingredient-led cooking. Many of the vegetables, herbs and edible flowers come directly from the resort’s own gardens, while everything else is sourced from trusted local producers with whom the team has built longstanding relationships. Here, the concept of farm-to-table is not a marketing slogan but a genuine commitment reflected in every dish.
The cuisine draws inspiration from South Tyrolean tradition while embracing a refined contemporary style.
Every plate remains deeply rooted in its surroundings yet feels modern, elegant, and beautifully balanced. There is no unnecessary theatricality, no pursuit of visual spectacle for its own sake. The ingredient is always allowed to remain the true protagonist, elevated through thoughtful technique rather than hidden behind it.
The wine list deserves equal attention.
Its carefully curated selection showcases some of South Tyrol’s finest producers, one of Europe’s most exciting wine regions, while also including an excellent choice of outstanding labels from across Italy and northern Europe. It’s a collection assembled with genuine expertise, inviting guests to discover a region whose winemaking heritage is every bit as remarkable as its landscapes.
Yet dinner never truly marks the end of the day.
At Seehof, there is always time for one final walk around the lake, just as the fading light gives way to the stillness of evening and the entire retreat seems to exhale alongside its guests. These are the moments that rarely appear in hotel brochures, and yet they are often the ones that stay with you the longest.

The Long Goodbye
On the journey home, I found myself reflecting on a simple question:
What is it that truly makes a stay unforgettable?
I don’t believe it’s simply having an exceptional spa, an immaculate room or an outstanding restaurant, although Seehof Nature Retreat undoubtedly excels in all three. What truly sets it apart is its ability to weave each of these elements into one seamless experience, where every detail serves the same purpose: encouraging you to slow down.
That is no easy philosophy to create, and even harder to sustain.
Yet throughout Seehof, everything seems guided by a shared vision. The architecture works with the landscape rather than competing against it. The cuisine tells the story of the region without ever forcing the narrative. The daily programme invites guests to experience the mountains rather than merely admire them. Even the service reflects this same sense of balance: polished, attentive and deeply professional, yet always natural, genuine and refreshingly understated.
At a time when sustainability is so often reduced to little more than a marketing slogan, here it feels entirely authentic.

It can be seen in the ingredients grown within the resort’s own gardens, in the long-standing relationships with local producers, in the respect for seasonal cooking and, perhaps most importantly, in the way the property exists in harmony with the surrounding alpine landscape. Nothing feels performative. Sustainability isn’t something constantly advertised; it simply becomes evident through the way the retreat operates every single day.
Perhaps that authenticity is what truly distinguishes Seehof from so many other luxury destinations.
It doesn’t attempt to impress through spectacle or unnecessary extravagance. Instead, it offers something infinitely more difficult to create: a sense of wellbeing that quietly stays with you long after you’ve returned home.
Looking back on my time here, the memories that surface most often aren’t necessarily the grandest ones.
They’re the simplest.
Each of these memories shares something in common.
None of them exists to impress.
They arise naturally from the way Seehof connects its guests with the extraordinary landscape that surrounds them.
If I were to offer one piece of advice to anyone considering a visit to Seehof Nature Retreat, it would be this:
Give yourself more time than you think you’ll need.
Over the years, we’ve come to associate luxury with having more.
More space.
More facilities.
More experiences.
Seehof Nature Retreat offers an entirely different perspective.

Here, luxury isn’t measured by quantity but by the quality of time. It’s the privilege of waking up to the Dolomites outside your window. Of hearing birdsong instead of traffic. Of enjoying a dinner prepared with ingredients that follow the rhythm of the seasons. Of ending the day watching the mountains reflected across the still waters of the lake.
It is a quiet, understated form of luxury, one that never feels the need to announce itself.
Rather than seeking to astonish in the moment, it leaves you with something far more valuable: the desire to return.
And perhaps that is the greatest compliment any destination could ever receive.
Not that it offered a perfect holiday, but that it reminded you how extraordinary life can feel when you simply allow yourself the time to slow down.
