Scenic Eclipse offer ultra-luxury cruising and have further flawlessly combined luxury and discovery with the world’s first submersible night dive, onboard Scenic Neptune to witness one of nature’s rarest wonders.
A unique underwater experience that takes six guests plus an extra pilot up to 200 meters below the surface of the ocean, Scenic Neptune took its first journey under the surface which was simply breath taking: witnessing one of nature’s least-seen wonders, ‘Diel Vertical Migration.’
Scenic Neptune
Scenic Neptune is a custom-designed all electric submarine with large ultra-clear acrylic spheres which have been specifically designed for optimal underwater viewing. The submarine is also highly technological with a tracking system for the team above the surface to follow, alongside multiple safety features, the most significant is that the submarine will slowly float back to the surface if power is lost. For those who may be hesitant, everything has been thought of to ensure your safety and comfort as you delve into the ocean and explore everything from the marine life to coral reefs and more in their natural habitat.
The Experience
As part of a 14-day Discovery sailing in Baja and Costa Rica, on 5th October 2022, Scenic Neptune took its first dive into the slumbering black waters of Mexico witnessing the ‘Diel Vertical Migration’, the largest vertical migration on Earth (where millions of quarter-inch long fish larvae make a one hour long, 1,000 feet ascent in search of food).
The reason behind this migration is that the fish travel up to eat and avoid being eaten. Vulnerable zooplankton hide from predators that reside in the darker depths of the ocean (squid and fish) during the day. At nightfall they surface to feed on microscopic aquatic plants that live at the upper few hundred feet of water. This is an ideal time for them to come out as they are hidden by the night and harder to be discovered by prey. Each part of the ocean is immensely different, for instance, at 1000 feet the water is roughly 4°C (39F) and the pressure is about 460psi, which is a lot colder than surface of the water and more than 30 times in pressure. As the animals come up the surface, they experience all these temperature and pressure changes.
Guests don’t have to worry so much for these temperature and pressure changes as the Scenic Neptune submarine is highly technological and is made for you to comfortable enjoy the sights below. On the first ever commercial night dive in a submarine to take place in Huatulco Mexico, views of stunning fish, lobsters and eels were witnessed in the darkened Mexican waters and these animals were just millimetres in size. This is what differentiates Scenic Eclipse Discovery Voyages as they offer something new and typically inaccessible, leaving guests with the most special memories.
