Meet the XPENG G6, A Sleek New Player in the EV Race
Keeping up with the latest Electric vehicle (EV) is a little like keeping up with the latest TV. It seems not a month goes by without a new, upgraded version on offer. In the world of EVs, battery technology and the ever-important range figures are constantly being pushed higher and higher.
Today’s latest offering is from XPENG, a high-tech Chinese company, set to bring in a range of electric vehicles over the next few months, kicking it all off with the XPENG G6. The G6 is a mid-sized SUV full of enough technology to keep even the savviest of youngsters satisfied.
Room to Move, Tech to Spare: How the G6 Delivers Daily
Once you and the kids get accustomed to the cutting-edge tech provided by the G6, it really is an easy car to live with. The wheelbase of 2.89 metres allows for plenty of leg room for the rear passengers, which is a great pairing with the suspension, allowing for whatever the UK roads can throw at it. To add to this, the 57.1 litres of boot space, increasing to 1,374 litres when the rear seats are lowered, means the car easily fits most families’ needs.
There are enough cup holders and charging points for all, and with a 960-watt 18 speaker sound system, the whole car will have all their wants met. Heated and cooled seats for the driver and front passenger are a blessing in all weathers and come as standard. Additionally, with no fewer than 12 cameras and 12 sensors around the car, parking the G6 is beautifully easy.
All of this can be controlled by means of a 14.96-inch central screen, aided by a smaller 10.2-inch screen positioned behind the steering wheel, keeping the driver informed of all the important details.

Luxury and Tech: Your Personal Lounge on Wheels
The XPENG G6 doesn’t just move you, it invites you to relax along the way. Whether you’re commuting or parked up with a scenic view, the cabin transforms into a luxurious lounge. The front seats can recline almost fully flat and align with the rear, while the back seats offer 12 reclining positions with a maximum angle of 38.4°, making it an ideal space to stretch out, watch a film, or enjoy your favourite music in complete comfort.

Inside, the cabin has been designed with a modern, minimalist aesthetic that matches its high‑tech credentials. Clean lines, soft‑touch materials, and ambient lighting that subtly elevates the mood, giving the space an understated elegance, while the full‑length panoramic sunroof floods the interior with natural light, adding to the calm, spacious atmosphere. The upholstery and trim options offer a modern, upscale look, with careful detailing that rivals some of the more established luxury players. Whether you’re behind the wheel or reclining in lounge mode, the G6 feels like a thoughtfully designed space. The trim options and colour choices allow owners to personalise their G6, bringing a touch of individuality to an otherwise sleek and unified design.

Exterior colours include Arctic White, Graphite Grey, Midnight Black, Silver Frost, and Fiery Orange, each enhancing the G6’s futuristic, coupe‑like silhouette. Interior finishes pair these with premium upholstery in black or grey, ensuring a cohesive and refined experience throughout.
The in-car experience is further enhanced by XPENG’s intelligent voice assistant, which can respond to complex commands from all four seating zones, even without an internet connection. Whether adjusting climate controls or launching a playlist, everything is handled effortlessly and intuitively.
Beyond the cabin, luxury is also embedded in the G6’s digital experience. Over-the-air (OTA) software and firmware updates continuously improve the Xmart OS, XPILOT driver-assistance system, and other onboard functions. These updates optimise everything from infotainment to air conditioning, ensuring the vehicle evolves alongside you, without a trip to the garage.
Even everyday tasks feel elevated. Through the XPENG app, you can remotely lock and unlock the vehicle, check battery status, and control key functions, bringing luxury and convenience together in one smart, seamless experience.

A 5-Star Safety Package: Built Like a Fortress, Without the Weight
XPENG has given a lot of consideration for safety. Their lightweight construction techniques combine 300 components into just one. This weight reduction increases range, but not at the expense of safety. The G6’s seven airbags, 80-tonne load supporting side pillars, and ADAS system, which is constantly monitoring the surrounding area in real time, earned them a 5-star NCAP rating. You and your family can rest assured that you are all in safe hands.

Charge It and Go: The G6 Makes Life Simple
Charging is via a conventional style fuel flap on the near side front wing, and is built with both home charging and fast charging options, with fast charging figures going up to 280 kWh. There are two batteries on offer, providing a choice of either a 66 kWh or an 87.5 kWh battery, with the latter giving a claimed charging time, from 10% to 80% charge, in just 20 minutes. This, with a standard range of between 341 to 354 miles makes the G6 a viable alternative to classic internal combustion engines.
It is worth mentioning that the car on test achieved almost exactly what XPENG promised regarding range, but the fast charging times mentioned are very much down to the fast charger you are using. However, even standard home charging speeds of 7.7 kWh, on a fixed rate tariff, makes the switch to the G6 even more attractive.

A Confident Debut: The G6 Is Ready to Compete
I have to admit, I was pleasantly surprised with my time with the XPENG G6. There was a very good fit and finish throughout the car, and the full length glass sunroof helped make the cabin feel light and airy, thus making a nice driving experience. The standard equipment level really does leave you wanting for nothing else. I guess all you need to do is choose your colour.
