There’s a certain magic that happens when a hotel finally finds itself. Its confidence grows, its personality comes through, and suddenly everything feels a little itself. That’s exactly the feeling I got on my recent visit to Bingham Riverhouse – a wellness hotel that seems to have found its rhythm and strength. After years of me spending a lot of time in the bar – now the members’ lounge and still a gorgeous bar you don’t want to leave before midnight!
Perched beside the Thames in Richmond, with views that make you want to put your phone down (briefly, anyway), Bingham has quietly evolved into something rather special. Think chic riverside escape meets feel-good wellness, with a generous sprinkling of personality.
A little bit of Samantha’s vision
At the heart of Bingham’s story is owner Samantha, whose journey has helped shape the hotel into what it is today. There’s something lovely about seeing a place develop a genuine identity rather than simply follow the latest hospitality trend. Bingham feels considered, characterful and increasingly confident in what it wants to be.
You can sense that evolution in the details, the atmosphere and the way wellness has become part of the experience. Not in a preachy, green-juice-and-go-home-at-nine sort of way, but in a much more modern, effortless fashion. It’s wellness for people who still want a gorgeous room, a delicious dinner, a fabulous bath and a really good night’s sleep.
And that, to me, is the sweet spot.
The room? An absolute dream.
From the moment you arrive, the staff make you feel genuinely welcome. It’s warm without being over the top, polished without being stuffy – exactly how a riverside retreat should feel.
Then there’s the room. Oh, the room.
The detailing is gorgeous, every element feels thoughtfully considered, and the overall atmosphere is so peaceful that your shoulders seem to drop about three inches the moment you walk in. The bed, the pillows, the duvet? An absolute dream. The sort of bedding that makes checking out feel deeply unreasonable. I asked twice for a late check-out!
And the bath deserves a moment of its own. It is one of the most beautiful baths I’ve seen in a hotel room, although a small word of warning for my fellow vertically challenged travellers: like me, getting in and out may require a little planning. Consider it an unexpected wellness activity.
Add those incredible river views and you have a room that manages to feel both luxurious and restorative. I could happily have stayed considerably longer.
The minibar that converted me
Now, let’s talk about the wellness minibar, because this is where Bingham really won me over.
Hotel minibars have traditionally been a fairly predictable affair. Bingham’s take feels much more in tune with how we want to live now: a little indulgence, a little nourishment and drinks that make you feel good rather than simply fill a gap while waiting for dinner.
And then there was Trip.
I had Trip for sleeping, and I’m not exaggerating when I say I’ve been converted. I am now officially obsessed. Sometimes the smallest discovery on a hotel stay becomes the thing you keep talking about long after you’ve unpacked, and this was very much mine.
It’s a clever touch, too. The minibar becomes part of the experience rather than an afterthought, introducing guests to brands and products they might not have tried otherwise. Consider me influenced – in the best possible way.
Wellness, but make it chic
What I particularly love about Bingham is that the wellness element is woven into the experience rather than presented as the entire personality of the hotel.
The menus reflect this beautifully. There’s a refreshing mix of chic lifestyle and wellness at your fingertips, so you can enjoy the pleasure of eating out while discovering ingredients and additions with feel-good benefits. It’s an approach that feels current, accessible and, crucially, enjoyable.
The food was delicious, and I loved the fact that even the ice cream had extra wellness credentials. Yes, ice cream. Because surely one of the great joys of modern wellness is discovering that feeling good and having a treat are not mutually exclusive.
It’s a much more appealing proposition than the idea that a wellness break must involve punishment disguised as self-improvement. At Bingham, you can have the beautiful setting, the lovely meal, the yoga and sound baths on the lawn, the indulgent dessert and the restorative night’s sleep. Nobody is asking you to choose.
There is one thing worth noting: Bingham may surprise guests who arrive expecting a more traditional hotel experience. The wellness offering is substantial enough that you might not expect quite so much of it if you haven’t been following the hotel’s evolution. But I think that is part of its charm. It isn’t shouting about being a wellness hotel; it’s simply making wellness part of a very good stay.
A riverside reset with personality
There are plenty of hotels that can give you a beautiful room. There are plenty that can serve you a lovely dinner. And there are plenty that have added a few wellness products to a shelf and decided they’ve ticked the box.
Bingham Riverhouse feels different because the elements work together. The thoughtful details, the wonderfully comfortable bed, the welcoming team, the wellness-minded menus, the minibar discoveries and those gorgeous Thames views all contribute to something that feels coherent and full of character.
Most importantly, the hotel seems to have found a confidence in its own identity. Samantha’s journey and the evolution of the property have brought it to a point where it feels less like a hotel trying to be everything to everyone and more like a place that knows exactly what makes it special.
I left with a serious case of bed envy, a new obsession with Trip and the feeling that Bingham is entering a particularly exciting chapter.
If you’re after a riverside escape with a little more thought behind it – somewhere you can sleep beautifully, eat deliciously, discover something new and feel just that bit better by the time you leave – put Bingham Riverhouse on your list.
