It is hard to believe that flying private has been a means of transport for more than 60 years in the UK for the privileged few, and during that time, the rise of the PJ, as it is called by those in the know, has increasingly become less of a status symbol and more of a necessity.
And so, naturally, the demand to perfect this ultra-luxe means of aviation has led manufacturers to explore the needs of today’s avid traveller, whether for business, leisure, or a combination of both.

Introducing the Cessna Citation Ascend, set to make its European show debut at AERO Friedrichshafen, an aircraft that is poised to define a new benchmark in luxury aviation, seamlessly combining performance, efficiency, and unparalleled comfort, all in the form of a sleek jet that carries up to twelve passengers, and we were amongst the first to see it.
Given the chance to see the jet in action, I was initially ushered to lunch at the Aviator Hotel, a landmark often associated with nearby Farnborough and much loved for its aviation-themed architecture, designed to mimic an aircraft propeller.

A delicious poussin for lunch offered a chance to meet Textron’s sales team, who briefed us on the endless array of customisations available onboard (think bespoke leather, wood panelling, and upholstery in a range of fabulous fabrics), and with that, it was time to head to the airstrip.
As I arrived at the passenger terminal at Farnborough Airport, I was reminded of just how seamless private flying actually is. Slick revolving doors and an entrance mat, all very reminiscent of a five-star hotel, led me into the wing and, there, rather than joining a queue to check in, I simply handed over my passport and was invited to relax in a rather stylish-looking lounge, cocktail (or champagne, if one prefers) in hand. Shortly thereafter, we were beckoned into black vans without any of the usual faff that comes with flying commercially.

At first glance, the Ascend is nothing short of exceptional; it has a regal bearing and a commanding visual presence. As I entered the jet via a few steps, I was in awe of its luxurious interior, with luxe finishes including a leather-clad ceiling and truffle-coloured seating, along with a carpeted flat floor, something that allows the seats to swivel mid-flight for that much-welcomed extra legroom.
Textron has made every effort to ensure the jet suits the growing needs of its travellers. Though the aircraft might be targeted at business aviation, it is well equipped to cater to the desires of a discerning aviation enthusiast, with its core market now also reaching first-time jet buyers and luxury connoisseurs.

Inside the cabin, the space has been thoughtfully designed, and Ascend can seat up to 12 passengers, all of whom can enjoy their in-flight tech devices. The cabin is equipped with 19 USB ports, one for each passenger and crew member, and wireless smartphone charging at each main cabin seat.
Our host played music as we glided through the air, demonstrating the speakerless audio setup, an optional extra using a cutting-edge Bongiovi system, so one can enjoy one’s favourite tracks high above the clouds.
Mechanically, the Ascend is also a masterpiece, built on an ethos of efficiency at altitude, with its credentials supported by its payload capabilities, ensuring the jet runs smoothly. Dual-channel Pratt & Whitney engines offer greater fuel efficiency and increased thrust, enabling Ascend to perform at high altitude.

Also ensuring an optimal journey for the pilot, the cockpit is just as well appointed as the cabin and features the latest high-tech Garmin avionics, synthetic vision, and heated windscreen systems, all designed to ensure maximum visibility when navigating the skies.
Another cleverly designed addition is Ascend’s increased payload, which enables the jet to carry more baggage or passengers, perfect for occasions when packing light is not an option.
About forty minutes into the flight, as we traversed the blue skies from London to Dorset (with the most gorgeous views of glitzy Sandbanks along the way), it was time to turn around and head back to Farnborough as our demo flight came to an end.
A smooth landing and a few footsteps back to the terminal, and our journey had come to an end. A memorable journey from start to finish, and the chance to experience one marvel of an aircraft, Ascend has set a new benchmark in luxury aviation.
