The village pub is at the heart of every community. At the time of writing, Boris Johnson recently announced the closure of all pubs, clubs, bars and restaurants. You may be thinking that there is very little point in reading a feature of an establishment that you cannot visit as we are either social distancing or self isolating, but that is where you are wrong! To many in rural communities the village pub is the hub of life. It is not just a place to go for a swift half on the way home or for a craft G&T at the end of the working week, it is a place to meet friends, family and a hub for the community. Read on to find more about our luxury lunch at Galvin Green Man.
The award-winning Galvin Green Man set in the picturesque Essex Countryside is the core of the local area. As you would expect from the Galvin brothers, the food is exceptional, not to mention judiciously priced. With a three course Sunday lunch, including a glass of prosecco for under £30 per person and a lunch and dinner menu that changes daily, featuring locally grown and reared produce, with vegan and vegetarian options, Galvin Green Man has catered for every sector.
The Sunday Roast is not to be missed, however, do arrive hungry! The beef was perfectly pink and generous in portion. Yorkshire puddings were crispy and light and the roast potatoes…OH MY! These were the fluffiest and crunchiest roast potatoes I have ever tasted. Unfortunately, I only had room for a scoop of their home-made pear sorbet which was akin to biting into a ripe, juicy pear.
In addition to the above, Galvin Green Man also has a set Bib-Gourmand menu that has a range of delicious items for just £19 for three courses for lunch and £22 for three courses for dinner, exceptional value indeed.
Dating back to 1341, Galvin Green Man not only has an outstanding restaurant, but also a cosy bar with a roaring fire, a selection of cask ales and craft spirits and a range of traditional bar snacks, all of which are homemade from scotch eggs, to pork scratchings and spiced nuts. Upstairs there are four versatile rooms, all named after local businesses that can be used for private dining and meetings.
With a diverse array of events that include monthly wine tasting evenings and dinners with Galvin Green Man’s sommelier, traditional monthly pub quizzes that ignite the competitive spirit, and hopefully in the Summer months, monthly BBQs will resume that will see us all enjoy locally sourced grilled meats, fish and vegetables, all held in the expansive gardens.
Art and culture evenings are also a firm fixture of the Galvin Green Man’s event calendar and include talks and discussions with local and regional artists and more.
We are living in a time of uncertainty. We do not know when pubs, clubs, bars and restaurants will reopen but one thing is for certain is that once this passes, the support of an independent pub and restaurant will be more important now than ever.
Galvin Green Man is not just a pub and restaurant, it is a community. This is evident in the friendliness of the staff, and the passion they exude when describing each and every dish, that they know about first-hand as they have tried it in their morning and evening briefing.
I urge you to visit this award-winning establishment and encounter the wonderful spirit of this extraordinary place that is evident from the moment you walk through the door.
