Now here’s a fun smart watch “The HONOR MagicWatch 2”. In these challenging times of isolation and the COVID-19 crisis, technology is helping all of us.
Honor’s statement proudly claims them to be “obsessed with design and creativity, by being unique and compassionate”. Too true. This description is both bold and accurate, as a result of their collaboration with a number of creative individuals in the world of art and graphic design, including; Jacky Tsai, George Greaves, Wang DongLing and Giovanni Ozzola.
The HONOR MagicWatch 2’s strap is just the beginning of my story. I was sent the shiny 42mm watch to review and try out. It sat neatly in its box ready to show me what it could do. My first impression was that it was a sleek design and – hooray – it’s a round watch, just how a watch should be! I wasn’t at all intimidated by any complexity in the how to use manual once I downloaded and got into the Huawei Health app which is needed to reap the full benefits of this smart watch. I knew that many smart gadgets these days have you suffering from battery life anxiety. Not this one! I charged mine just once two weeks ago using the magnetic wireless charger provided, and it’s still got plenty left over to see me through to the end of this week.
The Honor MagicWatch comes in two different models: one is 46mm and the other 42mm. The HD display screen often caught the attention of passers-by who were eager to meet this new device on my wrist. They were pleasantly surprised when I told them that it wasn’t just meant for those eager to track their fitness progress as it also features health monitoring.
My own GP was impressed to see that the record of my blood pressure, sleep pattern, heart rate and steps count, and pleased that they were showing up as healthy numbers. Already I was finding that my watch had brought out the competitive side out in me, thanks to the attractive prompting of the HUAWEI TruRelax and TruSleep apps. This is more than a bit of a positive feature to have strapped to your wrist, if you ask me. Being a keen swimmer, I checked on water-resistance. I learnt that this watch is water resistant at 50m, which is deeper than I’m ever likely to go.
I cannot imagine how the Honor MagicWatch manages to have so many functions and yet remain a wonderfully light luxury too. It organises my busy events schedule, notifies me of incoming calls, announces incoming text messages and reminds me of upcoming scheduled events.
How does this watch compare to the Apple Watch? Firstly the price of the Magic Watch is almost half the price of the popular square faced Apple Watch and obviously with that in mind, it does mean that functions a little differently, maybe a little slower. Whilst swiping from left to right the touchscreen fluidity on the Honor watch seems to be a little less smooth than the Apple watch. It does lag and at times freezes when calls are coming through. They also, sadly don’t support NFC (near field contact) which means you’ll not be able to swipe your wrist for any contactless purchases how you are able to with the Apple watch.
Overall though, I am smitten with this watch. We’ve become the best of friends. It’s pleasing to the eye, stands out as an attractive accessory, yet is splendidly functional. Already it has saved me from many event clashes, as well as tactfully encouraging me to up my step count and reminding me to just breathe during my busy commutes into the Capital. Yes, I’m always on time!
