The InterContinental Mauritius Resort Balaclava Fort is unquestionably one of those places where I’m tempted to keep everything very quiet and not tell anyone. The resort embodies the idea of an opulent escape: a tropical island retreat with immaculate beaches, vast mountain peaks, a tempting array of amenities and activities, and superb food.

There may not be a more ideal setting than the pristine beachfront of Balaclava Bay in Mauritius, where you’ll find yourself surrounded by gorgeous coastlines, dazzling blue oceans, lush tropical gardens, and a backdrop of green mountain peaks. You are within a 20-minute drive of Port Louis, the island’s capital. Direct flights from London take less than 12 hours to arrive at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport, which is located less than an hour from the resort.

We get an instant feeling of awe from the grand lobby area. The multi-story tall space offers an open view out onto the turquoise blue ocean, creating a light and airy atmosphere. The InterContinental Mauritius Resort has a total of 210 rooms, radiating a beautiful Mauritian feel with a curated selection of Mauritian arts, hand-woven textiles, and crafted furniture that provides unique local charm throughout the resort. A relaxing island ambience is created, helping you slow down and enter island time.
Our Bedroom
All rooms are located in low-rise buildings spread across the beachfront, maintaining a relaxed and private island feel. We stayed in the Deluxe Ocean View Room. Our room, spanning a total of 56 sqm is made to feel and appear even bigger by their innovative design of dividing different levels of our rooms to maximise space usage, with the bathroom, dressing area, and work desk area on the raised level, leading down to the sleeping and living area, and eventually out onto the private balcony, which overlooks the groomed gardens and beach. The bathroom deserves a special mention. The sleek marble room offers a large, deep freestanding bathtub; you could be forgiven for thinking you’re at the spa. The showers and toilets are also separate, which is a personal must.
The interior of the room features contemporary designs, with highlights of Mauritian artwork incorporated using natural dark wood for furnishings and neutral colours to radiate a sense of calmness. Small aspects which stuck out to me were the smartly positioned plug sockets dotted around the bedside and vanity area. Such a simple point, but it makes such a big difference.
Things to do at InterContinental Mauritius Resort Balaclava Fort
Leisure time at the InterContinental Mauritius Resort can be as adrenalin-pumping or as calming as you choose. For those looking just to relax and drift away into a state of zen, we suggest booking a massage in the world-class treatment room at the wonderful YUJ Spa or just relaxing by one of the infinity pools (there are two); there is also an endless supply of sun beds dotted along the beach.
However, those looking for something a bit more exciting than lounging by the pool should head over to the resort’s boathouse, where you’ll get a more adventurous and action-packed paradise island experience such as kayaking, water-skiing, or snorkelling; or try out deep-sea fishing, sailing, or take a trip on the resort’s Glass Bottom Boat. We recommend heading over at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. for their scheduled outings. Many of the water sports are complimentary, including water skiing so if you haven’t tried this kind of sport before, here is the place to do it.
Those looking to keep fit can enjoy the incredible facilities offered by the resort: an impressive high-tech fitness centre, a picturesque garden jogging track that circles the whole property, beach volleyball, badminton, table tennis, beach football, and plenty more activities to get the heart racing. For the little ones, there is a wide range of activities in Planet Trekkers, the resort’s signature kids’ club, providing children aged 4 to 12 with plenty of fun opportunities to keep them entertained all day.

You are spoilt for choice when it comes to dining experiences; the resort has five restaurants and three bars spread around its grounds, allowing you to experience exotic spices, authentic Mauritian treats, freshly caught seafood, and gourmet international fare. Most importantly, all-inclusive packages are also available.
Senso is the resort’s main restaurant hub, offering international buffets for breakfast and dinner. Situated in the heart of the hotel underneath the grand lobby, it is very popular with guests, so avoid it during peak hours.
Segala is a Mauritian restaurant, a great introduction for guests to experience the local culture through authentic dishes and drinks. If you are looking for a more romantic setting and something intimate, we recommend Noble House, an Asian fusion restaurant offering candlelit tables both indoors and al fresco. Book in advance, as it is popular with couples and families!
The Indian restaurant Veda was our favourite, set in a magical setting, with ancient trees and draping vines adding to the ambience. Seats circle the peaceful water installation. Mauritius and India share a long history, with over 330 years of ties, so it was no surprise that the attention to detail was highlighted within our food and service.
Locating on a small island, it is important to minimise environmental impact. This is reflected in the resort’s constant efforts to keep its carbon footprint as light as possible by using locally grown produce whenever possible, including home-grown fruits and vegetables from their in-house organic gardens. Sourcing freshly caught seafood daily from local fishermen and preparing dishes in an innovative way, maximising flavour and nutrition.
