Life can be very cruel, but nothing could have prepared me for the recent and sudden loss of my dear mother. To say that bereavement is traumatic is the biggest understatement. High anxiety mixed with extreme anguish and topped up with unimaginable stress sounds like a nightmarish cocktail, and just like too much of a really boozy drink, this triple measure of negative moods has been taking its toll on my mental and physical wellbeing. It wasn’t until after a trip to Nuyu where I began starting to feel like myself.
After the initial horrific shock, I began to slowly address my grief. But it’s no surprise that a few months of not eating or sleeping properly has left me feeling very, very low. Knowing that I look as distressed as I feel has only added to my utter despair as I fight the daily sadness. Despite the best-ever cuddles with my darling pre-schooler, life has felt ridiculously empty, and I’ve wondered, will I ever look or feel better again?
A concerned friend practically ordered me to take some me-time, recommending somewhere I could feel rejuvenated – even for a few hours – to let someone take care of me from the outside. Specifically, my tired and lacklustre skin.
If I needed a sign that the trip to NuYu London was a good idea, then I only had to look as far as the address. A skincare clinic on Princess Road? Big tick. As I tubed it to Primrose Hill, the world started to look like a prettier place. Goodbye dark and dreary, hello light and lovely. All I wanted was for Dr Arti Singh to make me feel pretty, too.
Rescuing a face from the physical impact of grief is quite a task. How would Dr Arti – a natural beauty herself -work such magic? I figured that facial aestheticians must be like superheroes with needles. Inside NuYu, it dawned on me that I had no idea what I wanted or what to ask for: inject my wrinkles or fill my dermals? Decisions, decisions. It turned out that my enthusiastic doctor had her own understanding of my particular needs, and on studying my facial anatomy and underlying structures – not to mention my dry skin condition thanks to all those tears – she began to build up my confidence in a therapy I had never heard of.
Pitched as a true breakthrough in anti-ageing treatments, Profhilo® is a cross between a skin booster and filler, distributing hyaluronic acid into the skin via a small syringe. It’s more of an introduction to the world of cosmetic enhancements, and these past few years have gained it a bit of a celebrity following.
With the heavy emotional load I was carrying around, Dr Arti and I agreed that right then, this lighter touch was right for me. And so, I settled in for my Profhilo® treatment and let the master go to work. It’s a good thing that this bio remodelling involves the highest concentrations of Hyaluronic acid on the market because my skin care specialist was going to need all the help she could get.
Precisely injecting ultra-pure hyaluronic acid into either side of my face and around my cheek and jaw areas, the gel-like formula spread beneath my skin like honey. Dr Arti’s Profhilo® wonder juice began the stimulation of four different types of collagen and elastin, attracting water into the deeper layers of my thirsty skin.
The doctor had managed my expectations and so there were no surprises looking back at me in the post-care mirror. That first round of six injections was just the beginning and I would need to head back for Profhilo® round two but that was okay, I knew what to expect.
I left NuYu still looking like old me but feeling pleasantly nourished. And while patience has never been my virtue, over the next couple of days my skin developed an incredible glow. Even more impressive was the tightening and lifting effect on my now smoother face. Looking healthier helped re-energise me from the outside in.
Experiencing the death of a loved one is far more harrowing than the general stresses and strains of life. And it will take more than healthy, glowing skin to overcome my intense grief at the loss I’ve suffered. There is a hole in my life that can’t be filled with plumped up features. But despite that, we all need a pick-me-up and looking youthful and feeling radiant are brilliant remedies.
