On a delightful spring day in London, I stepped out of Charing Cross station to find the city bustling with activity. The atmosphere was alive with a pleasant buzz and vibrant energy, complemented by the warm rays of sun. Excitedly, I made my way towards Page8 Hotel, situated right in the heart of the action at Trafalgar Square. Nestled between Leicester Square and Covent Garden, the hotel boasts an enviable location, just a two-minute stroll from Charing Cross tube station and a mere three minutes from Leicester Square. It’s truly remarkable to be in such a prime spot!
Checking in
As I arrived, the entrance was bustling with activity on the steps. Stepping inside, I found myself in Page8’s chic and modern coffee shop, Page Common. It serves as a combined lobby, check-in area, and café, which immediately caught my attention, especially being an avid coffee enthusiast. What’s particularly convenient is that while the coffee shop is accessible to all from the outside, it remains open 24 hours exclusively for in-house guests.
The staff effortlessly juggled roles, transitioning between receptionist and barista – a remarkable skill indeed. They efficiently checked me in, assigned my room, and skilfully crafted exceptional coffees complete with intricate latte art, a testament to the dedication of Page Common’s team. Their warm smiles and composed demeanour made the check-in process a breeze as I made my way to my room on the third floor.
The Rooms
Page8 boasts 138 spacious bedrooms, featuring five distinct room types: Double, Twin, Superior Double, Deluxe Double, Junior Suite, and Family Room. During my stay, I was upgraded to a Deluxe Double room (22 m2), ideal for solo or couple travellers. Each room is equipped with modern tech comforts, including a Marshall radio with a curated “London inspired” playlist. What’s more, the minibar offerings are complimentary, and I appreciated that the beverages and snacks were locally sourced with fresh ground coffee and loose tea leaves.
The hotel’s design exudes modern simplicity, with clean lines and a sleek royal blue palette that extends throughout the furnishings, accentuated by touches of marble and copper. This aesthetic lends itself perfectly to capturing stylish Instagram-worthy posts. The all-marble bathrooms are a luxurious touch, stocked with shower amenities from C.O. Bigelow Apothecaries and sustainable bamboo toiletries.
Moreover, every room is thoughtfully designed with soundproof windows and wall insulation, ensuring a peaceful night’s sleep amidst the bustling city. I was pleasantly surprised that despite my room overlooking the busy road and offering views of Trafalgar Square, I didn’t hear a peep and slept soundly throughout the night.
The Location
Being situated right in the heart of London, Page8 not having a dedicated restaurant on-site for dinner is hardly a drawback (although I hear they’re opening a rooftop restaurant this summer). Their coffee shop is already exceptional, and with a plethora of restaurants nearby, you’re spoilt for choice. If you’re feeling spontaneous, a leisurely stroll around the bustling streets nearby unveils a myriad of dining options. I stumbled upon a charming Japanese family-run restaurant just a two-minute walk away. During my walk, I realised that the area caters to every taste, from high-end bars and restaurants to authentic British pubs, and an array of cuisines from around the world. Page8 and the location welcomes everyone, from all walks of life.
In my opinion, if you’re a digital nomad with stylish taste, or a corporate citizen passing through London for business, Page8 hotel is the perfect choice. Likewise, if you’re seeking accommodation for New Year’s Eve in London, Page8 is an excellent option. I wholeheartedly recommend it and would return. I’m also intrigued to visit their sister property in Hong Kong, envisioning the trendy vibes it must offer. Additionally, the hotel boasts an urban explorer programme called the “London Explorer Series”, providing insider tips for exploring neighbourhoods not typically featured in standard London guides, encouraging visitors to immerse themselves in local culture beyond Zone One.
Page Common
The following morning, I leisurely checked out and found a cosy spot at one of Page Common’s high wooden tables. I savoured the perfect cappuccino served in stylish ceramic mugs and a buttery croissant. Although not particularly hungry, I perused the menu, which boasts an all-day brunch selection including tempting treats like Avocado Toast with Poached Egg or the Breakfast Bap (Sesame Brioche Bun with Crispy Bacon, Fried Egg, Tomato Relish). Page Common partners with a local roaster, Assembly Coffee, for their in-house blend, and offers fragrant teas by Good and Proper Tea. The ambience on this early Sunday morning was different from my arrival – a serene and relaxing atmosphere, perfect for a leisurely breakfast before exploring the city.
Final Thoughts
Overall, my experience at Page8 was brief but delightful. It has now become a cherished recommendation in my repertoire for those seeking the best city hotel stays. It particularly suits for the curious and discerning traveller, seeking a modern yet understated stay with ample offerings nearby, Page8 is the ideal base when you’re in London. The announcement of a new rooftop restaurant set to open in Summer 2024 only adds to the anticipation, promising to become a bustling hotspot in the capital – a prospect I eagerly await.
