The Glenlivet Eternal Collection event to launch a 56-year-old liquid was nothing short of extraordinary – a seamless blend of heritage, artistry, and sensory discovery. From the moment I stepped into the Portico Rooms at Somerset House, it was clear this was not just a tasting, but an experience curated with intention and elegance.
This unveiling felt particularly momentous. The Glenlivet has released the Second Edition in its Eternal Collection: the ultra-rare 56-Year-Old, limited to just 60 bottles worldwide. As the definitive Speyside single malt, The Glenlivet continues to set new standards in the world of high-aged, prestige Scotch, and this release, priced at €52,500, cements its position at the pinnacle of craftsmanship.

The Eternal Collection itself is a series of ultra-luxury single malts, each edition increasing in age and paired with a bespoke artwork created by a visionary collaborator. The Eternal Collection debuted in 2024 with its inaugural release, The Glenlivet 55 Year Old, a collaboration with computational architect Michael Hansmeyer. The collection sets a new standard for ultra-luxury, high-aged single malts, inviting whisky lovers to build a collection to cherish and witness the evolving legacy of The Glenlivet.

For this second chapter, The Glenlivet partnered with pioneering design studio Fredrikson Stallard, renowned for their audacious and avant-garde creations. Their contribution is nothing short of breathtaking: an innovative sculpture inspired by the rugged beauty of Speyside, The Glenlivet’s ancestral home.
Crafted to accompany the unique spherical decanter, the sculpture depicts scorched, raw heather branches emerging from a patinated brass-plated ‘cairn’, a symbolic nod to the ancient chimney-shaped rock stacks left before battle by Highland clans, signifying remembrance and the passing of time. The decanter itself is completed with a 24k gold-plated neck and cap, adorned with faceted glass in The Glenlivet’s iconic teal. The result is a presentation that transcends luxury; it is a true collector’s piece where whisky and art exist in perfect dialogue.

The Glenlivet 56-Year-Old – a masterpiece created through decades of unwavering dedication. Nurtured for over five decades and finished in a bespoke Sherry cask seasoned with a unique blend of Oloroso, Pedro Ximénez, and Palo Cortado, this expression represents The Glenlivet’s relentless pursuit of Scotch perfection. Carefully constructed in Spain before finishing in Scotland for over three years, this singular cask has shaped a profoundly elegant and richly layered whisky.
Experiencing it was a privilege. The nose opened with red apples, stewed plums, and orange zest, followed by indulgent waves of dark chocolate and sticky toffee pudding, warmed by heather honey and roasted hazelnuts. On the palate, apricot slices and spiced apples led the way, unfolding into velvety vanilla, toasted oak, raisins, and a delicate whisper of fresh ginger. The finish was rich, incredibly smooth, and enduring, each note lingering long after the glass was set down.

Hearing from The Glenlivet’s Cask Master, Kevin Balmforth, added even more depth to the moment. His reflections on crafting a whisky of this age, the precision, and the generational stewardship required, brought the liquid to life in a profound way. Equally captivating was listening to Fredrikson Stallard speak about channelling the raw, untamed spirit of Speyside into their sculptural form, capturing both the landscape’s strength and the delicate beauty shaped by time.
To taste the 56-Year-Old first, before the meal, before the pairings, before anything else-felt fitting. It set the tone for a celebration of the legacy and creative spirit of Speyside’s most iconic single malt.
For anyone who appreciates remarkable craftsmanship, whether in spirit-making or design, this event was a true celebration of excellence and rarity. The Glenlivet 56-Year-Old stands as a testament to what can be achieved when heritage, innovation, and artistry converge, and it is destined to become one of the most coveted additions to the world’s finest whisky collections.
