The Sparkle of Innovation: Diane Kordas on Revolutionising Luxury Jewellery
Since the inception of her label in 2000, Diane Kordas has been causing a stir in the world of luxury jewellery design. Her collections have attracted the attention of A-listers, from Taylor Swift, Madonna, Scarlett Johansson, Gisele, and Cindy Crawford, to name a few.
We met the American jewellery designer to discuss the secrets to her creative success.
What inspired your journey into jewellery design?
My fashion background has had a major influence on my journey as a jewellery designer. It has also taught me to understand and appreciate different materials and aesthetics. I often designed pieces for my friends or myself because we could never find designs that suited our lifestyle. As a result, I fell in love with the process.
My mother was a commercial artist, and she played a significant role in my journey. We spent endless time together visiting galleries and museums, which influenced my decision to study fashion and textile design at Parsons.
The Art of Balancing Styles
How do you balance classic and contemporary in your designs?
If I’m completely honest, I think it comes quite organically as my style, by nature, is a combination of playful modernity and sophistication.
How has your personal style influenced your collections?
My style is effortless but playfully vibrant. I’m a fan of ‘easy glam,’ which I believe is evident in my collections. I enjoy creating pieces that can be seamlessly transitioned from day to night. Jewellery should complement the individual as opposed to the outfit, so I like to keep that in mind when designing my collections.
How do you choose the materials for each piece?
The inspiration behind each of my collections is influenced by various aspects of my life and different factors such as art, architecture, or history. Subsequently, my goal is to select materials that breathe life into my vision. My designs are a balance of visual appeal and storytelling.
How do you adapt to trends while staying true to your style?
I do enjoy keeping on top of trends, but I don’t let trends predict or inspire my next collection. I created my brand based on my personal style and therefore, I draw inspiration from within rather than conforming to trends. In my perspective, jewellery shouldn’t be seasonal; it should be timeless.
Can you share a special story behind one of your pieces?
As mentioned, my inspiration is drawn from various aspects of my life, encompassing even the cherished memories of my childhood. For instance, I have a vivid memory of sneaking into my mother’s jewellery box as a child, where I was captivated by a gold ring embellished with a diamond cougar. Years later, while working late in my London studio, that memory resurfaced, becoming the catalyst for my Animal Kingdom collection.
What is your advice for those looking to pick and style jewellery?
I am always mindful that jewellery is deeply personal. The pieces they opt for should resonate with their identity, rather than merely accessorising their wardrobe. I encourage my clients to gently push their boundaries; even audacious jewellery, when thoughtfully paired, can accentuate rather than dominate their personal style.
Any dream collaborators in the arts or design world?
Oh, without a doubt – Haider Ackermann.
What advice would you give aspiring jewellery designers?
The best advice I could give is to not be afraid and not to overthink too much. Do your homework and learn your demographic and ‘surround yourself with quality, not quantity’. Ensure your collection maintains a certain standard of quality, reflects your personal style, and takes into account the bigger picture.
Are there any upcoming collections or projects we should look out for?
I would LOVE to tell you but I just can’t give it away… soon, but not yet. Trust me, it will be worth the wait!
