If you’re looking for a unique dining experience in the heart of Central London, Bantof restaurant is the spot for you. The space exudes 1920s glamour, big on the Gatsby vibes – with tufted fabric walls, a curving granite wine bar, and gilded mirrors. The mix of tables and bar stool seating in each room is spaciously arranged, so you don’t feel packed in like a sardine, instead the vibe is intimate and very inviting.
Our evening began with a whimsical twist as we indulged in “A Pair of Silk Stockings” a twist on a milk punch cocktail and the vibrant Margarita Verde; it was evident that Bantof’s mixology game was on point. Select a drink from The Soho Stories cocktail series, which was created to showcase the vibrant and eclectic history of the district. Bantof collaborated with SuperNacular to craft a novel collection of cocktails, each inspired by the richly diverse characters and personalities of Soho. Options include Viper, a highball classic with an earthy twist, and Up Market, a stiff and aromatic serve inspired by the scent and flavours of Berwick Street Market. Much of the menu features tastefully crafted drink options served in sleek and stylish glassware. The flavour pairings are carefully selected to provide a memorable drinking experience, while also doubling up as amusing conversation starters.
A key idea of the owner is that art will be shown upstairs, with pieces on sale to support London’s emerging artists. The ever-changing exhibitions are created by some of the art world’s most promising rising stars and established names. Each gallery experience is thoughtfully curated in-house by the team, with the artworks complementing the intimate and creative ambiance.
The collections rotate regularly so that every visit to Bantof is different. From a 10-year-old art prodigy to works by highly established experimental artists, guests can’t predict the work that will be on display next at the restaurant.
There is a wide selection of delectable dishes available all day at the modern European restaurant. The menu is carefully curated using fresh, locally sourced ingredients that align with their commitment to sustainability. Our culinary escapade ventured further into uncharted territory as the starters graced our table. The sea bream tartare, an ode to the sea’s treasures, danced harmoniously with creamy avocado, smoked almonds, and a zesty yuzu dressing. The octopus, a star in its own right, elegantly draped over fava bean puree, brought a delightful interplay of textures and flavours with its caper jam and herb oil companions.
Mains elevated our culinary journey much further than we had anticipated. The lamb chops were perfectly cooked, blushing on the plate and the meat was very succulent, accompanied by a velvety carrot puree, heritage carrots and herb oil. The ribeye steak, a carnivore’s delight, was a poetic ode to indulgence, served alongside maitake mushrooms and a peppercorn sauce that elicited pure culinary delight.
Dessert was a delightful encore, featuring a Lemon Meringue Cheesecake that was nothing short of sweet, zingy and not too cloying. Each luscious bite married the tangy zest of lemon with the delicate sweetness of the meringue, leaving us craving an extra slice. And to cap off two Limoncello chasers elegantly whisked us away to a Mediterranean dreamscape.
If the weather happens to brighten up, ask to sit outside on Bantof’s second-floor terrace which boasts a brown brick exterior against bursting greenery, perfect for al fresco dining on a mild summer’s eve.
