Caviar – one of life’s exclusive luxuries. With more time spent at home, Caviar To You have come up with a caviar subscription service designed to save you time, effort and introduce a little luxury into everyday life.
We met with founders Adele Tomasin and Mark Wilkes to talk about all things caviar.
What was the Inspiration behind Caviar to You?
We became inspired through our experience and by working with many clients in different industries. What seems to work is that people want things to be simple and easy. We also enjoy a high level of service and little pampering, when buying products. We love luxury goods and fine food and fish, and often use subscription services to have them delivered to our door.
So we thought, “why not move the caviar industry to subscription?” We realised that while we place a regular subscription order for farm fresh meat, vegetables and fish, there is no provision for regular ordering of those things, such as caviar, that provide us with a little bit of forbidden pleasure.
And so the “Caviar to you” model was born. Perfectly fresh caviar to hand!
We both love travelling, high quality food and good wine, especially sparkling wines … our fridge is constantly stocked with the essentials for Italian Aperitivo and when we can entertain at home we love to share some of our exclusive products with our friends… we thought others might enjoy the same and wanted to make it easy for them.
Is there a correct/best way to eat caviar?
In our opinion there are many ways to enjoy Caviar. For the connoisseurs amongst us, or just as a high dose of Omega3, the best way is perhaps to eat it on its own, using a Mother of Pearl spoon, but how many of us have one of these in our kitchen drawers?
We love a small spoonful on a slightly salty blini, chickpea pancake, or even a potato cake topped with goat’s cheese, cream cheese or a slice of smoked salmon. We have even tried caviar on muffins and crumpets with a little butter.
Most Michelin chefs use it as an ingredient to enhance taste and texture and make their creations even more exquisite. But if you’re at home, just try it with a cocktail or a glass of your favourite fizz. and, to create that little extra ambience, a candle or two, a little soft jazz and your favourite person.
What subscriptions do you have personally?
As foodies, we have regular subscriptions of meat, veggies and all plants ready meals, and of course wine. The only thing missing was caviar! So we decided to fill the gap and offer a number of options:
– a sample pack,
– a connoisseur plan,
– a caviar lovers plan,
– a feast plan.
All our plans are a monthly subscriptions starting at £250 for 4 jars per month that everyone can enjoy at home. How does it work?
The approach is a simple. Each month we commit to deliver fresh caviar to your door on a specific date. So you always know when you can look forward to a treat! We send the caviar in a temperature controlled box to arrive within 48 hours (in the UK) and within 72 hours in Europe. We will advise you of a tracking number so that you know when your little box of indulgence will arrive. There are also no minimum term and you can change your plan or cancel at anytime.
Why do we not eat much caviar in the UK compared to other countries?
Caviar has suffered from a reputation problem in the UK in the past, but the current way to produce it is much more ethical and sustainable. We source our caviar directly from the producer in Latvia. They farm the sturgeon in a controlled environment and look after them until they are ready to produce the precious eggs. Our supplier was also one of the first companies to ‘harvest’ caviar from sturgeon without killing the fish.
We believe British people are moving towards understanding that this forbidden pleasure can now finally be enjoyed without guilt.
What is the pedigree of the farming of your fish?
The source of our caviar is Siberian sturgeon, farmed in a controlled environment in ponds fed by water pumped from bore holes 150 meters deep. The fish take between 6 and 7 years to mature before they are able to produce eggs. During this time they are treated with love and respect. They live in ponds where no artificial pesticides or antibiotics are introduced and the fish are isolated from any form of wild life.
This is the kind of treatment that allows even the most discerning to enjoy our high quality caviar. We source from the same supplier that has supplied the Royal household and Caviar House in London Piccadilly.
What is next for Caviar to you?
Originally we wanted to create a Club and tasting room, but the current world situation has challenged us to start with the online offering. We look forward to being able to expand into experiences associates with a Luxury lifestyle.
We would also like to work more with restaurants and fine dining and we are sourcing other high end products. We believe in high quality and sustainability, which is why we are currently in touch with an organic producer of Saffron in Spain and an Olive oil plantation in Sicily.
