A lot has been said about Gouqi London in the last few months. Nestled just off the bustling Trafalgar Square, Gouqi is a portal to Chinese culinary tradition and a true centre of excellence. This culinary gem seamlessly blends its scenic influences with an unwavering commitment to the intricate details of Chinese hospitality.

Interiors – Feng Shui Heaven
Stepping into Gouqi, I was enveloped by an ambiance that exuded elegance and sophistication. Traditional Chinese motifs intertwine with contemporary design elements, creating an atmosphere that stimulates the senses and sparks curiosity. The restaurant’s layout, with its distinct dining areas and intimate private rooms, offered a glimpse into the intricacies of Chinese hospitality, inviting us to explore the depths of its culinary heritage. Feng shui techniques and principles also come into play with the careful layout and interiors – it is all in the detail.
The journey began with the Berri Bar, a stylish antechamber that served as a prelude to the gastronomic delights awaiting within. Here, amidst the soft glow of ambient lighting, the stage was set for the culinary adventure ahead. Moving into the main dining area, I was greeted by plush velvet booths and refined decor, which underscored the luxurious dining experience that awaited.
For those seeking a more intimate dining experience, Gouqi London has two private dining rooms, each designed for 10-12 guests, with the clever option to combine them for larger groups of up to 22. There are also semi-private dining tables available, set away from the restaurant, that offer privacy and exclusivity, making every dining occasion feel special.
Chef Tong & The Team
At the helm of Gouqi’s kitchen is Chef Tong Chee Hwee, whose culinary mastery is present in every dish. With decades of experience, including a remarkable 18-year tenure at the Hakkasan Group where he earned seven Michelin stars, Chef Tong brings a wealth of insight into the evolution of Cantonese cuisine. His innovative approach marries tradition with contemporary flair, offering guests a glimpse into the ever-evolving landscape of Chinese gastronomy.
Complementing Chef Tong’s culinary expertise is a dedicated team, expertly assembled by Restaurant Director Alan Tang. Each member brings a wealth of experience from the world’s most esteemed hospitality establishments. Alan has decades of experience at the forefront of Michelin-starred restaurants and luxury hotels. Chef Tong was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award, and Gouqi with the Fine Dining Award at the 2024 Golden Chopsticks ceremony recently, a testament to the hard work of the whole team.
The Food
Cocktails
A special mention has to go to The Berri Bar within Gouqi London, a beacon of cocktail craftsmanship, offering an array of Asian-inspired concoctions. This enchanting space marries traditional ingredients with the flair of modern mixology, crafting an experience that’s both unique and memorable. Among the signature offerings, the Rose Dragon and the Golden Monkey were journeys, each sip unfolding layers of flavour and innovation. Yet, it was the Bixi that captured my imagination the most—a dark, complex blend where Peated Whisky and Lapsang Tea danced in smoky harmony. Beyond cocktails, the bar’s extensive wine list was a voyage through vineyards near and far, offering a selection that promised to complement any palate.
