Belfast is a vibrant and dynamic destination that offers a rich tapestry of history, culture, and natural beauty. The city’s storied past is palpable as you wander through its streets. From the iconic Titanic Quarter to the murals that tell the tale of the troubles, the city is a living testament to resilience and transformation. History buffs will find themselves immersed in a fascinating journey of discovery. There is so much to see and do in the bustling Cathedral Quarter; a hub of creativity, where art galleries, theatres, and music venues come alive with vibrant energy.

Walking through the ornate entrance of the Grand Central Hotel I am struck by the grandeur and sophistication of this historic building. The lobby is resplendent with marble floors, crystal chandeliers, and elegant furnishings, all of which evoke a sense of timeless elegance and refinement.

The hotel is in the Linen Quarter, an area that used to be home to warehouses during the Victorian era when Belfast was known as the world’s linen capital. The hotel is conveniently situated just a two-minute walk away from City Hall and within walking distance of all the major attractions in the city.

The Grand Central Hotel is a true masterpiece of Victorian architecture. Originally built in 1893 as the headquarters of the Ulster Bank, the building was later converted into a hotel in the 21st century, preserving many of its original features and architectural details. Today, the Grand Central stands as a testament to the city’s rich heritage, offering guests a chance to experience the grandeur and charm of the past.

With 300 rooms including 10 suites spread over 23 floors, each one has been decorated with tasteful furnishings and luxurious fabrics that reflect the building’s rich history. The rooms are spacious and light-filled and exude a sense of refined elegance that is synonymous with the hotel’s reputation. Beds are nicknamed “Cloud Beds” by the hotel, and they are undeniably comfortable, with goose feather and down duvets and pillows.

The hotel’s centrepiece is undoubtedly its iconic Observatory bar, which offers panoramic views over Belfast from the 23rd floor. The 23rd floor is so high up you can even watch the weather fronts moving in from the south and into the sunlit uplands. The bar’s plush furnishings, soft lighting, and floor-to-ceiling windows create an intimate and relaxing atmosphere that is perfect for enjoying a glass of Champagne while taking in the stunning views of the city. Now, let’s talk about the pièce de resistance — the cocktails. The talented mixologists at the Observatory Bar have crafted a menu inspired by local attractions, like the White Star (Irish Whiskey, white chocolate & orange, black walnut bitters and smoke.)
From the first sip to the last, you’ll be treated to an explosion of flavours and a symphony of carefully balanced ingredients. Yes, the cocktails may come with a slightly higher price tag but trust me when I say that the experience is worth every penny.

Beyond the bar, the Grand Central has several other dining options, including the Seahorse Restaurant, which serves a range of locally sourced seafood and fresh produce, and the Grand Café, which offers an extensive selection of light bites, coffee, and pastries. But it’s not just the hotel’s style and sophistication that make it stand out.

The Grand Café, situated on the ground floor, is a delightful establishment that opens daily. This cosy bistro-style eatery offers a wide range of delectable dishes that will leave your taste buds tingling with delight. We enjoyed The Café’s beautiful, bright corner room, complete with floor-to-ceiling glass walls, providing a stunning view of the surrounding scenery. In the restaurant, my prawn starter and fish and chips main were flawless, as was the deconstructed rhubarb crumble I definitely didn’t have room for.

Moving upstairs on the first floor, you’ll be greeted by the Seahorse Bar and Restaurant. This charming establishment boasts an equally bright and welcoming atmosphere, with tasteful Art Deco design that is sure to impress. The bar is stocked with an impressive selection of spirits, including local craft gins, providing a unique taste of the region.

The hotel’s exterior, with its imposing stone façade and grand archways, is a testament to Belfast’s industrial past, while its opulent interior, with its ornate mouldings and period features, harks back to a time of grandeur and glamour. The hotel’s rich history is also reflected in the many original artworks and artefacts that adorn its walls, each one telling a story of the city’s past.

The Grand Central Hotel’s reputation for style and sophistication is matched only by the exceptional level of service provided by its staff. From the moment you arrive, you are greeted with a warm welcome and made to feel at home. The staff are knowledgeable, attentive, and always on hand to assist with any request, making your stay as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.

Belfast beckons with its intriguing history, vibrant culture, captivating landscapes, and delightful cuisine. It’s a city that invites you to explore, discover, and immerse yourself in its unique charms. Next time you’re in Belfast, visit The Grand Central Hotel.
