The Biltmore Mayfair have opened their newest restaurant, Grill 88. Set on historic Grosvenor Square, Grill 88 is all about the highest-quality steaks, seafood and wine, in an intimate luxury setting. In a word, we can summarise it as WOW.
The menu, designed by Executive Chef Luis Campos, celebrates the highest-quality ingredients, from outstanding aged Lake District Sirloin Steaks to Japanese Wagyu, Australian cuts, and the finest Kelly and Gillardeau oysters. Every grilled dish will be prepared with specially-sourced Holm Oak charcoal, rich and earthy with peaty notes, that adds an underscore of earthiness to the food. When designing the menu, Chef Luis looked back on his travels around the globe and aimed to bring not only some of the world’s highest-quality meat cuts but also experimental flavours, to Grill 88.
The best steak house experience of 2023 so far
The food here is really quite stunning. We were welcomed by Wine Director Jolanta and Chef Costas where we were able to select from a variety of prime beef cuts, including grain-fed Japanese A5 Kagoshima Black Breed Ribeye Wagyu, and large cuts to share, salt ageing in a display. For a touch of Mayfair ceremony, guests can enjoy steak cooked at the table on Himalayan salt or a lava block, including a gorgeous Black Pork Iberico Presa. A great way to taste different cuts of meat is the Butcher’s Platter served with an array of sauces and butters.
The starter highlight was a House 88 Beef Tartare. The beef was aged and diced in such a delicate way to really maximise the flavour of the beef. It had a gorgeous mature taste and so many textures and favours thanks to the white soy cured egg yolk, Devil’s sauce, black truffle and parmesan. Stunning. We are reliably told that the French Onion soup is better than the original from France too! A dessert must have is a Baked Alaska to share, lit tableside. Inside you will discover a coconut, mango & passion sorbet, vanilla sponge, all covered by a thick Italian meringue.
What about the drinks?
The wine list is carefully curated by Jolanta Dinnadge and her team. Wines can be matched to food with a huge range of luxury wines on offer. Grill 88’s signature cocktail list celebrates the local Mayfair neighbourhood with speciality drinks, such as the ‘Mezcal Mews’ and ‘Grosvenor Affair’ served alongside classic cocktails, all prepared lovingly by Riyad. We are fans of cocktails at The Biltmore, especially The Pine Bar’s immersive cocktail experience.
Evoking the glamour of times-gone-by with its sleek art-deco inspired interiors, the restaurant’s ambience is elegant, serene yet sultry. Sage green tones are complemented by cool white marble surfaces and brushed brass metalwork. The early evening sunlight flows in at dusk, thanks to large sash windows overlooking Grosvenor Square, and highlights the abstract hanging artworks by La Viola.
With just 32 seats, an open-plan kitchen and live cooking, Grill 88 promises a personalised and intimate dining experience. The attention to detail throughout the whole place is world class and promises a really memorable dinner.
Grill 88 is open for dinner from Tuesdays to Sundays. To reserve a table, please visit Seven Rooms.
