Located in the heart of London’s Fitzrovia, 74 Charlotte Street is an inviting, beautifully crafted space that is soon to be a staple. 74 Charlotte Street is led by head chef Ben Murphy, who has crafted a menu that matches the thoughtfully designed space with natural light, Mediterranean-inspired greenery, and a standout scallop-shaped cocktail bar.

The focus is on contemporary British cuisine rooted in classical technique, but served in a way that feels accessible and fun rather than overly formal. The cocktail bar anchors the entrance, while the dining area offers a welcoming space for lunch or dinner, featuring an extensive wine list and a seasonal menu.
We spoke to Ben to find out a bit more about his new venture.

How did it all start?
Through a friend, I heard about the opportunity to open a new restaurant and that they were looking for a chef. I met Alex Fasoli, Managing Director of WSH Restaurants, back in June to understand the company’s vision, and we instantly clicked. We share many mutual friends, and I’d already heard great things about Alex — how he works, how he supports his team, and how he helps people grow as business leaders. For me, this opportunity was a no-brainer.
Tell us all about the culinary concept at 74 Charlotte Street?
Accessibility is at the heart of it. We’re not a fine-dining restaurant; we’re a relaxed, welcoming space with incredible food. There are no tablecloths, just a vibrant bar that greets you as soon as you walk in. The music is upbeat but not overpowering, the service is attentive without being formal, and the food is visually appealing but always flavour-led.

What new flavour combinations or ingredients have recently caught your attention?
Honestly, I’m cooking the food I love to eat. We don’t over-complicate things — we let the ingredients speak for themselves. I use a lot of citrus to season fish dishes, and lemon juice to bring acidity and brightness to sauces. It’s about creating bold flavours through simplicity.
Tell us about the drinks and décor at 74 Charlotte Street?
We’ve got an incredible bar with a great cocktail list, plus a wine selection of over 300 bottles. The décor is warm, inviting and minimal, designed to reflect the street outside while creating a sensually stimulating environment. Soft curves and thoughtful lighting make the space come alive.

There is a huge injection of fun at 74 Charlotte Street with a kids’ menu, an ice-cream trolley and a bar you don’t need to book. Tell us more about these fun additions?
That word accessible comes up again. I want everyone to feel welcome (apart from dogs, unfortunately!) Families are a big part of that, so we’ve introduced a kids’ menu and our amazing ice-cream trolley, which features rotating flavours. It all adds to a sense of fun and freedom — no restrictions, just great experiences. Between our £39 lunch menu, à la carte and tasting menus, there’s something for everyone.
Any future dishes you are working on currently that you can tell us about?
My team and I are already planning the spring menu. We always cook seasonally; our festive menu is just about to launch, but I’m constantly thinking ahead, developing ideas, and setting new trends.

How important is sustainability/impact at 74 Charlotte Street and the food you create?
Sustainability is central to how we operate. We focus on nose-to-tail and root-to-stem cooking, meaning we use every part of an ingredient wherever possible. It’s not just about reducing waste; it pushes creativity in the kitchen. Our menus are built around what’s in season, keeping things fresh and reducing reliance on imported produce.
Top 3 favourite restaurants in the UK?
Sabor by Nieves Barragán, Woven by Adam Smith and Benares by Sameer Taneja.
If you could award a Michelin star right now to a UK chef, who would it be and why?
Legado Restaurant by Nieves Barragán – I went to eat there for her soft launch, and it was incredible. Up there with one of my favourite restaurants.
What is next for you and 74 Charlotte Street?
My focus now is on consistency, being busy, and giving guests the best possible experience. I’m also passionate about inspiring the next generation — my team is young, and I’m working closely with both the kitchen and front of house to help them grow and reach their full potential.
