Look no further than the Angel at Hetton for a dreamy romantic getaway with Michelin-star dining in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales. Managed by two-star Michelin chef Michael Wignall, this heavenly treat provides the quintessential experience that combines celestial comfort, class, and incomparable cooking.
Rooms
A friendly staff member warmly greeted us at reception and escorted us to our room. The Angel at Hetton offers 16 uniquely designed rooms, situated in either the main building or the Fell View Barn house. Each room boasts a fully stocked mini-bar and branded bathrobe for your comfort and relaxation. The décor seamlessly blends rustic charm with contemporary elements, featuring exposed beams and an open-plan layout. The romantic ambience is accentuated by amenities such as a freestanding bath and rainfall shower, offering picturesque views of Ryestone Fell.
A thoughtful touch is the ‘AH’ branded toiletries, infused with refreshing scents like lime, cedarwood, rose geranium, and clary sage, all hand-poured in Yorkshire. These can also be purchased to bring the essence of your getaway home. After a restful night’s sleep, I awoke feeling incredibly refreshed and rejuvenated. The plush mattress and pillows felt like clouds, while the bedding was luxuriously soft. The inviting aroma and comfort ensured a peaceful night’s sleep. Certain rooms are family and dog-friendly, equipped with cots and dog beds, ensuring everyone can enjoy the ultimate comfort during their stay.
Michelin Star Dining
Chef Michael Wignall is undeniably a culinary mastermind, earning two Michelin stars, four AA rosettes, and high accolades in the National Restaurant Awards. Our experience of his tasting menu was nothing short of glorious.
The 8-course tasting menu, technically 9 with the extra sweet treats, unfolded over a perfectly timed 3-hour sitting. With a vast selection of wines from around the world, each dish was expertly paired. Our Front of House Assistant, Jack, eloquently explained every aspect before we eagerly indulged.
It’s astonishing how Chef Wignall transforms simple ingredients like carrots and artichokes into culinary masterpieces. From roasted carrot tartare to artichoke fondant with winter truffle, each dish was a revelation. Though it’s hard to choose a favourite, the pear and hazelnut ingot with frozen Doddington cheese left a lasting impression with its harmonious blend of sweet and savoury.
Every plate showcased meticulous attention to detail, ensuring every bite was a symphony of flavours. The exquisite presentation compelled us to savour every mouthful, making it an experience we wished would never end.
Breakfast time
I had underestimated breakfast, expecting a simple buffet after the lavish dinner, but I was pleasantly surprised. The class and quality persisted until checkout.
Led to our table by the lovely Gemma, we discovered a taster-style menu awaiting us. Each dish was meticulously explained, from homemade bread and jams to chocolate pastries and avocado with beetroot pastrami as starters. The hot course featured perfectly boiled eggs, mushroom pate, beetroot pudding, and more delicious bread.
Every bite was irresistible, and Chef Michael’s vegetarian options were especially noteworthy. His contemporary, considerate, and iconic style shone through in every dish. Rest assured, meat options were available too, but the vegetarian offerings were truly exceptional.
Sensational Staff
In addition to the delightful food, elegant design, and tranquil ambience, it was the exceptional staff who truly elevated the experience. Every member of the team was warm, and welcoming, and went above and beyond to ensure our stay was nothing short of extraordinary. Chris, the Assistant Restaurant Manager, added charisma, charm, and humour to our dining experience. Catherine, the Operations Manager, was gracious and personable. Gemma and Jack, our Front of House Assistants, impressed us with their knowledge of the cuisine and were incredibly personable.
Despite its accolades, the Angel at Hetton exuded warmth and humility. The staff created a fun, relaxed atmosphere that set the stage for a memorable and rejuvenating stay. Their genuine hospitality made our experience truly exceptional.
It’s the little things
The Angel at Hetton seamlessly blended nature and elegance. Moreover, it paid meticulous attention to detail, adding thoughtful finishing touches. Upon arrival in your room, a delightful sweet treat awaited you, along with a walking map of local hikes. Furthermore, at breakfast, a program was provided, offering suggestions for local attractions and highlighting Angel’s Gin. Additionally, it provided insight into the handmade pottery by David Green used in the restaurant. Moreover, it included a local weather update to help plan your day accordingly.
Furthermore, the decor throughout the hotel and restaurants exuded style, elegance, and modern flair. With preserved plants, wood beams, exposed brick, clean white walls, and a stunning 4-log burner, it added to the cosy atmosphere.
