Tucked away just off Trafalgar Square, the newly transformed Rockwell Bistro & Wine Bar at the five-star Trafalgar St. James hotel is quietly establishing itself as one of central London’s most stylish yet welcoming wine destinations. Whether you’re seeking a romantic evening, a sophisticated pre-theatre drink, or a relaxing escape from the city’s bustle, Rockwell offers an impeccable balance of elegance and comfort.
What we love the most about Rockwell is the affordable luxury element – There are some gorgeous wines which are available in different sizes such as 125ml so you can try different types of wines and pair these with dishes from the menu which include British Wagyu and much more.

A Prime London Location with Iconic Views
Rockwell’s central location is hard to beat. Mere steps from the National Gallery, Buckingham Palace, and Covent Garden, it’s perfectly situated for post-shopping indulgence or a laid-back dinner before a show in the West End. But it’s not just about the convenience – it’s about the setting.

Dining at Rockwell: A Celebration of Flavour and Freshness
The menu at Rockwell Bistro & Wine Bar is designed to suit both casual grazers and culinary explorers. An all-day affair, it leans into deli-style dishes and creative small plates that celebrate local produce and global influence. The kitchen takes pride in sourcing ingredients with care, bringing together a blend of British quality and international flair. Expect light, seasonal fare, beautifully plated and ideal for sharing, with a focus on freshness, texture, and taste.
While the dishes change with the seasons, you can always expect something both sophisticated and comforting. It’s the sort of menu that caters effortlessly to relaxed catch-ups, spontaneous date nights, or solo afternoons with a good book and an even better glass of wine. We loved the small plates section especially the fillet of seabass with salsa verde and a moreish Hispi cabbage with a tahini miso cream.
There is a section of the menu dedicated to Trenchmore Wagyu, a regenerative farm in West Sussex, selling Sussex Wagyu beef. The slider is one of the best burgers in London – so much flavour and texture topped off with Manchego and a touch of chorizo. The rosemary grilled steak is full of flavour and served with some roasted garlic. For dessert the donuts are a must try paired with a little Pedro Ximénez. These dishes can be paired with any of the wines. Just ask Umberto and the team who can guide you through.

A World-Class Wine List – With a British Heart
At Rockwell Bistro & Wine Bar, wine is a storytelling experience. The list spans over 15 countries and strikes a balance between Old World tradition and New World innovation. From the elegant Laurent-Perrier La Cuvée Brut to England’s own Nyetimber Classic Cuvée and Chapel Down Bacchus, the sparkling selection alone is enough to entice enthusiasts. Whites range from the crisp Cloudy Bay Sauvignon Blanc and Chablis 1er Cru Mont de Milieu to lesser-known gems like Mandolás Dry Furmint from Hungary and the organic Zero-G Grüner Veltliner from Austria. Fans of skin-contact wines can explore options like the Qvevris Rkatsiteli from Georgia or Malvasia Ancestrale from Italy, offering structure and depth. There’s also a generous by the glass list, inviting guests to explore diverse varietals without the commitment of a full bottle.
Red wine lovers are equally spoiled for choice, with offerings structured by body and flavour profile. Those seeking light and fruity reds can opt for the Pinot Noir from Chile’s Limarí Valley or Beaujolais Villages Vignes de 1940. Richer, spicier options include the Joel Gott Zinfandel from California, Mathilda Shiraz from Australia, and the bold Finca Valpiedra Rioja Reserva from Spain. More complex bottles such as the Barolo Serralunga, Château Fonbel Saint Émilion Grand Cru, or Gevrey-Chambertin are available via Coravin, ensuring rare pours stay pristine. The menu also embraces sweet and fortified wines, like the Taylor’s 10-Year Tawny Port and Château Pajzos Tokaji, making it easy to end the night on a refined note. Whether you’re an aficionado or a curious explorer, Rockwell’s list offers a world tour in a glass — all curated with expertise and an open invitation to discover. The depth of quality and affordability is impressive.
In addition to its standout wine list, Rockwell offers something special for enthusiasts and novices alike: the ‘Behind the Bar’ wine and cheese tasting experience. Held weekly, this immersive event gives guests the chance to explore expertly selected wine and cheese pairings, guided by Rockwell’s in-house experts. It’s the perfect introduction for those looking to deepen their appreciation of wine in a relaxed, sociable setting.

Design and Atmosphere: Understated Luxury with a Laidback Touch
Rockwell’s recent transformation is part of a £6 million renovation at The Trafalgar St. James, including the addition of the Spring Garden Suites. The result? It definitely doesn’t look or feel like a Hilton. This is a space that feels luxurious without being intimidating. The interiors blend contemporary style with rich textures and warm tones, creating a chic, welcoming environment. Whether seated in the stylish lobby or the main bistro space, guests are enveloped in an atmosphere that feels both premium and personable.
There’s a deliberate contrast here: high-end design paired with an easy, neighbourhood vibe. It’s the sort of place where a spontaneous glass of wine can turn into a full evening affair as well as a great place for a date night. The location is unbeatable and there are lots of nooks and crannies for a cute table of two.
