Royal Lancaster London has partnered with the Natural History Museum to introduce a pollinator-inspired afternoon tea, celebrating the museum’s ongoing efforts to protect the natural world, with the hotel’s skilled chefs crafting an array of sweet and savoury treats inspired by British flowers and pollinators.
Dubbed the “Blooming British Afternoon Tea,” the experience reflects Royal Lancaster London’s commitment to sustainability, having been the first central London hotel to install rooftop beehives in 2009. This unique partnership combines the museum’s conservation work with the hotel’s renowned luxury and hospitality, creating a celebration of nature and pollinators. The list of insect pollinators is long and includes many different species of bees, flies, wasps, beetles, butterflies and moths. Pollinators carry pollen with them as they move from flower to flower. While honeybees get a lot of the credit, at least 1,500 insect species pollinate plants in the UK.

A Walk Through the Garden
This one-of-a-kind collaboration between Royal Lancaster London and the Natural History Museum is designed to champion a future where both people and pollinators flourish. By blending the museum’s conservation efforts with the hotel’s renowned warmth and hospitality, this partnership offers guests a truly memorable afternoon tea experience. The “Blooming British Afternoon Tea” showcases the importance of pollinators through a delicious and creative menu, all while emphasising the shared commitment to sustainability between these two iconic institutions.
It all starts with a scenic 30-minute nature walk from the museum through Hyde Park, following a specially crafted map to the Royal Lancaster London. Upon arrival at the elegant Hyde Café, choose an exquisite selection of Camellia’s Tea House teas, freshly baked scones, artisanal sandwiches, and signature sweets like “Daisy & the Bee” and “The Bee Hive.” This really is a unique, quintessentially British experience, while raising awareness about the vital role pollinators play in our ecosystem.

The Blooming British Afternoon Tea

The Royal Lancaster Afternoon Blend combines timeless English Breakfast tea with the rich, woody notes of China Keemun and the soothing floral essence of chamomile. Meanwhile, the Pollinator Blend brings together black teas from Darjeeling and China, enhanced by the delicate flavours of cornflower, rose, marigold petals, and organic bee pollen—a perfect nod to the pollinator-inspired theme of the event.

For those celebrating special moments or looking to indulge in this quintessential British ritual, a glass of crisp Taittinger Champagne adds an extra touch of luxury to the Blooming British Afternoon Tea. With its serene and stylish surroundings, Royal Lancaster London offers the ideal setting for guests to enjoy this memorable occasion. Additionally, the hotel provides a vegan and allergen-free option, ensuring that everyone can partake in the experience. A special children’s menu is also available, making it a family-friendly event.

Sweet, Savoury, & Scones
The Blooming British Afternoon Tea celebrates tradition, enhanced by pollinator-inspired themes. Two bespoke teas from Camellia’s Tea House accompany the meal: The Royal Lancaster Afternoon Blend, a soothing mix of English Breakfast, China Keemun, and chamomile, and The Pollinator Blend, which combines Darjeeling and China black teas with floral petals and organic bee pollen, offering a sweet, honeyed finish. These blends are carefully crafted to complement the menu’s savoury and sweet delights.
The menu features a delightful mix of traditional sandwiches such as maize-fed chicken with bee pollen on white bread, smoked salmon with cream cheese and dill on wholemeal bread, and classic egg mayonnaise with flowering chives. Warm homemade scones, served with clotted cream and a selection of preserves, provide a quintessential afternoon tea experience. The sweet selection is especially creative, with desserts like the “Toffee Dome” featuring toffee and saffron cheesecake, the “Daisy & the Bee” with vanilla sponge, lemon curd, and gooseberry marmalade, and the “Beehive,” a honey cake layered with honey and crème fraîche cream. The “Blooming Berries” offers a fresh mix of red berry compôte and orange blossom chocolate ganache, rounding out the menu with vibrant, pollinator-inspired flavours.

A celebration of nature
The Blooming British Afternoon Tea is more than just a culinary experience—it’s a celebration of nature and a call to protect it. Thanks to the creative vision of Head Pastry Chef Scott Villacora and his talented team at Royal Lancaster London, this iconic British tradition has been reimagined with inspiration from the Natural History Museum’s dedication to preserving the natural world. Every element of the tea, from the delicately crafted sweets like “Daisy & the Bee” to the floral-infused Pollinator Blend tea, reflects a deep connection to British flowers and pollinators, highlighting their essential role in maintaining biodiversity.
This collaboration supports vital conservation work. As Maxine Lister of the Natural History Museum notes, not only does this afternoon tea offer a memorable experience for wildlife enthusiasts, but it also plays an important role in raising awareness. By enjoying this tea, we can also help continue the Museum’s efforts to create a world where both people and the planet can thrive, ensuring that the ecosystems we depend on are protected for future generations.
