Sale e Pepe, the iconic Italian restaurant in the heart of Knightsbridge has celebrated its 50th anniversary. To commemorate this golden jubilee, the restaurant has undergone a luxurious refurbishment.
This transformation pays homage to its rich legacy and brings a touch of ‘la dolce vita’ to London. Once under the ownership of the Thesleff Group, known for its acclaimed portfolio that includes Los Mochis Notting Hill and Viajante87, Sale e Pepe is being restored to its former glory while preserving its essence for future generations.
Sale e Pepe’s Chronicle of Grandeur
Since its inception in 1974 on Pavilion Road, Sale e Pepe has been a cornerstone of the city’s dining scene. Its exceptional service and authentic cuisine have long established it as a destination for the elite, drawing a glittering clientele including politicians, film stars, fashion icons, and royalty. Over the years, the restaurant has become synonymous with the style and sophistication of Italy, offering a taste of la dolce vita in London.
To ensure the continuation of this legacy, Sale e Pepe enjoyed a luxurious redesign, signifying its Renaissance era. The refurbishment has been creatively led by luxury interior designer Hamilford Design, who is drawing inspiration from classic Italian aesthetics to create an elegant and inviting ambience. The bar area has transformed into a space reminiscent of a grand Italian ristorante, featuring wood panelling, a marble-topped bar, and a large bronze mirror, making it the perfect spot for a daytime espresso or an evening martini.
There are also some great traditions that will always be the same. The Tiramisú is a must and make sure there is always a cup of their special cappuccino on order too!
Italian Elegance Reimagined: A Symphony of Sights and Flavours
In the dining area, patrons are greeted with low lights, atmospheric dark blue walls, intricate wallpaper, and bronze mirrors, adding touches of elegance throughout. Drawing inspiration from Milanese townhouses, the layout remains the same, but the décor has been elevated to new heights, transporting diners to a chic Italian villa.
The interior of Sale e Pepe offers an intimate nighttime setting, with dim lights and small lamps over each table. Aesthetic artworks and mirrors adorn the surrounding walls, coloured a midnight blue. This is a comforting and classic yet sophisticated and upscale setting, highlighting Sale e Pepe’s authentic yet chic style.
In terms of location, Sale e Pepe is nestled alongside Sloane Street, one of London’s premier fashion destinations, and is merely a two-minute stroll from Harrods and Harvey Nichols in Knightsbridge.
The Food
The menu is also receiving an update, reflecting the true Italian ‘famiglia’ culture of sharing. Sale e Pepe classics such as Vitello Milanese and Linguine all’Aragosta have been reimagined into larger portions suitable for sharing. The new menu will feature dishes like Salt Baked Whole Seabass for two, Tagliatelle Caviar, and a diverse selection of Crudi.
Vitello Tonnato was as classic as it should be with a real depth of flavour from the tuna and capers. Another firm favourite starter for the table was a crab and avocado salad. The most tender crab and perfectly ripe avocado with tomatoes, spring onions, chives, Pimiento de Espelette and a hint of lemon.
Other menu items include a delightful Tartare di Tonno with perfectly smoked Scottish salmon, crispy shallots, and a dash of lemon topped with basil oil. The main message behind this menu reinvention? “A taste of Italy in every dish.” One of the key features on the new menu will be a “Catch of the Day”, including Mediterranean Branzino and Mediterranean Orata. Although the soul of Sale e Pepe remains the same, their new features infuse the restaurant with a touch of fresh elegance.
For the pasta courses, a range of gluten-free pasta will also be available, along with classics like Penne alla Vodka and Ravioli al Pomodoro. Don’t forget well-known dishes Sale e Pepe is famous for. Linguine all’Aragosta – pasta with lobster, cherry tomatoes, basil, and garlic. Though the selection of pasta is extensive, the melanzane alla parmigiana is a most delicious collaboration of tomato sauce, mozzarella and aubergine.
The Drinks
Drink offerings are evolving on this new menu, too. Classics continue with a Cafe Shakerato espresso cocktail and Dry Martini. Along with a lengthy cocktail selection, Sale e Pepe continues with a large wine list. Plus, several non-alcoholic options. These include a Rossino and Bellino, as well as a Martini Vibrante Spritz.
For spirits, there are several pages of rum and whisky. A variety of whisky options blend culture and flavour, ranging from American to Japanese whisky selections. When it comes to the wine selection, once again a broad range of regions is offered, from Northern to Southern Italy. Red, white, sweet and sparkling, all are offered on the new and improved menu.
