Something quite remarkable occurred two years ago in the heart of Notting Hill. Amongst the chaos that nearly wiped out the hospitality industry in 2020, a group of visionaries had the idea to launch a new restaurant.
Despite all odds working against them, two years later, Los Mochis became one of the most popular spots in London’s gourmet landscape, pioneering Baja-Nihon cuisine at world-class levels. How did they achieve this, you may ask? Well, it all begins with their unique and ground-breaking concept. The rock on which they built their epicurean church.
Pioneering the pursuit of a perfect marriage of cuisines, Los Mochis has fused the heat, passion, and vibrancy of Mexican Baja-style dishes with the elegant precision of Japanese fine dining. This unlikely match harmonises beautifully with what can only be described as a Pan-Pacific culinary revolution. As Stephen King wrote in Shawshank Redemption, “they say the Pacific has no memory.” Perhaps that is why Los Mochis has succeeded in becoming one of London’s best-kept secrets.
What’s New?
Los Mochis’ fluid menu reflects their artistic dynamism. The only constant in this equation is their continued commitment to fresh, quality ingredients they source from only the best artisans. The ever-evolving menu has been scrupulously researched and finessed, and each plate uses seasonal and sustainable products. Tacos are the canvas with over 20 unique pan-pacific creations and combinations.
As Spring reveals its refreshing gaze, Los Mochis breathes new life into their menu with additions such as their Spicy Salmon and Truffle Guacamole on Crispy Rice, as well as their Bang Bang Cauliflower Tacos. They channel the raw majesty of ingredients such as habanero gochujang, spicy salmon tartare, dynamite aioli, guacamole, smoked paprika, and coriander cress, to name a few. But maybe you’d prefer something a little more grounded. Fret not, for their signature Trailer Park Chicken will surely deliver on all your gourmand wants and needs.
Viajante87
Los Mochis’ imperial domain is not solely limited to their exquisite cuisine. In fact, they are no strangers to fine wines and supreme beverages. Since its opening, Los Mochis has become the number one seller of tequila in the United Kingdom, and, moreover, they boast the second-largest collection of rare tequilas in all of Europe. As such, it is no surprise that with the resounding success of their in-house Agaveria, Los Mochis have decided to launch a standalone bar of their own – Viajante87 – just down the road.
Roughly translating to explorer, this aptly named snack bar transports guests through time and space to warmer, wilder climates. Described as an experiential bar combining cutting-edge cocktail creations and experimental crafting techniques in a high-energy hideaway where Tokyo meets Tulum.
What about the drinks?
It all starts with 100% agave-based signature cocktails and all the classics. Viajante87 has a dedicated mixology lab sprawling across the basement (with only a handful existing in London). It will focus on a zero-waste drinks philosophy, cutting-edge cocktail creations and outlandish crafting techniques. This is reflected in the brilliant quality of the creations. Below are our favourites:
The Traveller’s Martini – Altos Tequila Reposado, The Lost Explorer Salmiana Mezcal, Tropical Fruits Honey, and Matcha Tea.
Smoked Earth – Los Siete Misterios Doba-Yej Mezcal, Lacto Fermented Veggies, and Pink Salt.
Sleeping Chicatanas – Altos, Tequila Reposado, Los Siete Misterios Doba- Yej Mezcal, Metaxa 12 y.o Koji Rice, and Pine Tree Honey.
Viajante87 creates a balanced hybrid space merging Izakaya-style comfort with the intense variety of a Mexican Agaveria. Hidden to be found, this secret gem is sure to be the subject of many discussions among those in the know.
Something very special is happening in Notting Hill, and it is all down to Founder Markus Thesleff. The standards of quality, service and next-level food are truly world-class and a blueprint for hospitality and a great night out.
