A Historic Landmark on St Stephen’s Green
Built in 1824, The Shelbourne has stood on St Stephen’s Green for nearly two centuries. As Dublin’s flagship five-star hotel, it occupies one of the most prestigious addresses in the city. The hotel is located on the city’s grandest square, within a short walk of Trinity College, Dáil Éireann, the National Gallery, National Museum and National Library, as well as Dublin’s principal shopping streets and theatres. Its position places guests at the centre of the capital while overlooking the calm of the Green.
The Shelbourne has played a significant role in Irish history. In 1922, the Irish Constitution was drafted within the hotel under the chairmanship of Michael Collins. One of the original copies remains in the hotel’s ownership today. Following a major renovation, The Shelbourne combines restored Georgian features with contemporary comfort, maintaining its historic character while offering modern standards throughout. There is a huge sense of place at the hotel and the staff are so proud of the hotel’s history. You can feel it all around, from the photos of well-known visitors that adorn the walls, through to the elegant Shelbourne-branded coffee bags in the rooms.

The John Ford Suite
The hotel offers 265 bedrooms, including 19 suites, many named after distinguished guests associated with its history.
Room 438, The John Ford Suite, is named in honour of the acclaimed Irish-American film director. The suite overlooks St Stephen’s Green and reflects the hotel’s heritage through classic detailing and elegant furnishings. Generous proportions and natural light create a refined and comfortable setting. The suite feels like home straight away. There is a huge sitting room with several sofas that leads through to the bedroom and very well-appointed bathroom. As part of the amenities, there was a really fun suite cocktail experience. Ready-to-drink cocktails such as a Cosmo, Old Fashioned and Aviation were placed alongside a cocktail mixer.
Other notable suites include those dedicated to Princess Grace, John F Kennedy, Michael Collins and Eamon De Valera, further reflecting the hotel’s long association with prominent figures in Irish and international life.

The Saddle Room
The Saddle Room is the hotel’s steak and seafood restaurant, presented as a modern classic. Dark oak panelling, gold accents and an open kitchen define the space, alongside a dedicated Oyster Bar.
Executive Chef Garry Hughes focuses on premium Irish ingredients, presented with clarity and precision. For lunch, a cauliflower soup offered a composed and balanced opening, while the slow-cooked pork belly demonstrated depth of flavour with a variety of textures and careful presentation. The food is awesome and the room is stunning. The Saddle Room is a must-visit for lunch or dinner and there is a real sense of occasion and pride amongst the team there. The wine list is also comprehensive with something to suit every wallet.
Breakfast is served in The Saddle Room too, offering a selection of pastries, fresh fruit and cooked dishes, prepared to the same high standard as lunch the previous day.

Bars
The Horseshoe Bar remains one of Dublin’s best-known meeting places. Its original 1957 Sam Stephenson design has been restored, retaining its red walls, brass detailing and distinctive curved counter. Look out for a comprehensive Irish whiskey selection with top-tier, rare, and classic Irish whiskies. A whiskey flight is the best way to try these and there are some really interesting barrel aged whisky cocktails too.
At the top of the grand staircase, 1824 Bar offers a more discreet setting for in-house guests, specialising in premium spirits and curated wines. There is also a great terrace that provides a sheltered open-air space on the mezzanine level, which is well worth a visit.
Wellness and Facilities
In addition to its historic interiors, The Shelbourne provides comprehensive leisure facilities. The Health Club includes a fully equipped gym. The spa features treatment rooms, a large and very nicely heated 18 metre swimming pool.
