I have had the privilege of experiencing some of the most exquisite destinations around the world. However, my recent stay at the newly refurbished Matfen Hall, nestled in the heart of Northumberland, stands out as a uniquely enchanting experience, especially as an example of the many stunning establishments the UK has to offer. Matfen Hall, a Grade II-listed stately home, is an intertwining of historical grandeur and contemporary luxury and has been thoughtfully restored by the Walwick Estate Group, promising an experience of unparalleled elegance and a charming beauty reminiscent of a Brontë novel.
I: Arrival at the Majestic Matfen Hall
My journey began as I approached the estate, driving through winding roads lined with lush greenery, I was greeted by the breathtaking facade of Matfen Hall, a true architectural marvel, standing proudly against the backdrop of the Northumberland countryside. The interior of the hall was equally impressive, with the historic Great Hall serving as its centrepiece. It was here that I first sensed the sheer grandeur and pristine preservation of the exquisite original features, made all the sweeter by the warm welcome of the staff, who were quick to make sure my pre-emptive stay was to be as relaxing as possible… But first, a welcome cocktail in the 1832 lounge bar, of course.
II: My Suite: A Realm of Splendour
Entering my suite, situated in the newly established courtyard renovation, I was immediately struck by a sense of elegance and comfort. High ceilings, accentuated with intricate cornicing, framed a room that was both spacious and rich in character. The centrepiece was a majestic emperor bed, promising nights of undisturbed tranquillity. The bed, draped in the finest 300-thread count Egyptian Cotton Sateen, was a cloud of comfort, ensuring restful and rejuvenating slumbers after days of exploration that the estate had to offer.
The suite’s windows offered a view of the idyllic central courtyard and its beautiful greenery and fountains, with just a ten-second walk from the room to the tapestry of manicured lawns, and lush woodlands that surround the 300-acre grounds. Each morning, I awoke to this enchanting vista, where the gentle play of light through the leaves created a kaleidoscope of colours.
The bathroom was a sanctuary in itself. The roll-top freestanding bath, large walk-in shower, underfloor heating, and elegant Carrara marble accessories exuded a spa-like tranquillity. Luxurious Penhaligon’s toiletries and plush towels added to the overall sense of indulgence.
The room is the epitome of comfort and style, where every detail has been thoughtfully crafted to enhance your stay.
III: In the Lap of Luxury – Unmatched Service and Hospitality
From the moment of my arrival, the staff at Matfen Hall extended a level of hospitality that was both warm and impeccable. Their attention to detail was evident in every aspect of my stay. Be it the chauffeur who safely escorted me from the station to the estate, the concierge, who regaled me with tales of the estate’s rich history, or the housekeeping team, whose discreet presence ensured my room was always a haven of order and elegance, the service was exemplary. Their efforts to provide a personalised and memorable stay were evident in every gesture, whether it was a warm greeting or a thoughtful recommendation and guidance through the day’s activities.
IV: Enchanted Grounds, A Picturesque Retreat into Nature
Matfen Hall’s sprawling grounds, an undeniable paradise, stood as a testament to the artistry of landscape design, blending nature’s beauty with human craftsmanship. The manicured lawns of Le Jardin Hollandaise, adorned with vibrant and neatly trimmed hedges, created a serene backdrop that enhanced the joy of morning walks.
As I meandered through these gardens, the gentle rustle of leaves and the harmonious chirping of birds formed a symphony that was both calming and invigorating, enveloping me in an atmosphere of perfect calm. Beyond the garden, the estate’s expansive parkland unfolded in lush greenery, dotted with tranquil ponds and scenic paths. This picturesque setting, rich in hidden nooks and natural beauty, invited reflective strolls and nature appreciation, offering discoveries and moments of peace with each visit. The notable draw to pop in my headphones and play Kate Bushes ‘Heathcliff’ was too irresistible and made for the perfect theme song to these breathtaking views. As I lost myself in the parkland’s embrace, it became clear that Matfen Hall’s grounds were not just a physical space but a journey through an ever-changing canvas of natural and crafted elegance.
V: Feasts Fit for Royalty
At Matfen Hall, dining ascended beyond the mere act of eating, transforming into a grand celebration of culinary arts. The afternoon tea, a quintessentially British tradition, was particularly enchanting, staged against the idyllic backdrop of the sprawling estate. Here, a diverse selection of teas ranging from the stalwart Earl Grey to rare, exotic infusions awaited, each pairing flawlessly with a delectable array of artisanal pastries and meticulously crafted finger sandwiches for all dietary requirements. The inclusion of effervescent champagne brought a luxurious dimension to the tea service, imparting a festive, almost jubilant quality to the leisurely afternoon conversations.
Beneath the stately Great Hall, the wine cellar, a subterranean treasure trove, played host to a remarkable champagne-tasting event. It was here that the subtle complexities of Laurent Perrier’s champagnes were unveiled to me, each glass a story told in bubbles and nuanced flavours, meticulously narrated by the passionate and knowledgeable sommelier, Oliver. This educational encounter with fine champagnes was as much a treat for the mind as it was for the palate.
The Cloisters Restaurant offered us a culinary journey that was nothing short of extraordinary. Its ambiance, seamless integration of antiquity’s charm, and the sleek lines of modern design, set a dramatic stage for a menu that sang praises of local fare and the creative flair of Head Chef Ernst Van Zyl. The accompanying wine list was a thoughtful compilation, featuring bottles that complemented each dish, enhancing the dining narrative with their rich profiles and origins. I may have overindulged in the delicious, locally sourced oysters for which I lost count of exactly how many dozens we enjoyed throughout our stay.
In a delightful contrast, the Emerald Restaurant presented an upscale, dynamic dining atmosphere, punctuated by modern decor and panoramic vistas of the estate’s grounds. The tasting menu we enjoyed in the evening was a bold foray into avant-garde gastronomy, with each plate artistically composed, challenging, and exhilarating the taste buds with every extraordinarily innovative bite.
These exquisite dining experiences, from the refined afternoon tea to the enlightening champagne tasting, and the exceptional culinary presentations at both the Cloisters and the Emerald Restaurants, were the epitome of gastronomic indulgence. Each meal was a chapter in a larger story of taste and elegance, with the settings ranging from the classical to the contemporary, ensuring that every dining occasion at Matfen Hall was etched in memory as a luxurious and sensory-rich narrative.
VI: The Retreat & Immersive Experiences to Engage The Senses
The Retreat at Matfen was the perfect daily indulgence to completely unwind, with offerings for everyone spa related preferences. This sanctuary seamlessly blends mind, body, and spirit wellness, starting with a serene swim under the sunlight-dappled glass roof of the 15-metre pool. The journey continued with the jacuzzi’s comforting water jets, which prepared me for the tranquil aromatherapy room, where mood lighting and gentle heat melted away stress, creating the perfect meditative state. Guests also have the option of the steam room and sauna, to be followed by the invigorating ice-cold bucket shower or monsoon shower available.
Amidst these amenities, the highlight was the exceptional back and arm massage treatment I received, where skilled hands expertly eased tension, epitomising the luxurious care central to The Retreat. Each element, from the advanced fitness area to the tranquil ambiance, was carefully curated for ultimate relaxation and rejuvenation.
After such a relaxing afternoon, an exhilarating treat was the cocktail-making class led once again by Head Bar Manager, Oliver. His expertise in mixology was impressive as he demonstrated the art of crafting the perfect cocktail. This interactive session allowed me to delve further into the world of mixology, learning the skill and art behind each concoction. I enjoyed creating various cocktails, each with its unique twist, which were as delightful to taste as they were to look at, thanks to some of the local spirit brands housed on their shelves.
VII: The Grand Finale – A Journey Through Time at Vindolanda
As my stay neared its end, leaving me heavy-hearted at the thought of departing from such luxury, I embarked on a chauffeured visit to the historic Vindolanda, just 10 miles away and organised by Matfen’s concierge. This excursion served as the culmination of my experience, with a guided tour that proved to be a fascinating journey through time. Delving into the Roman lives of those who inhabited these lands centuries ago, the tour brought history to life through well-preserved ruins and artifacts, the largest collection in Europe! It was not just an informative experience but a deeply moving one, offering a rich understanding of the area’s history. Seeing these ancient artifacts up close was a fitting and reflective end to my luxurious stay, connecting the past’s grandeur with the present’s splendour.
Epilogue: A Lasting Impression of History, Opulence and Hospitality
Matfen Hall stands as a beacon of historical elegance intertwined with modern luxury, far surpassing the expectations of just a luxury hotel. Its recent refurbishment has infused a new level of sophistication, seamlessly blending comfort, culinary excellence, and a rich historical tapestry. This majestic estate, with its exquisite accommodations and breathtaking grounds, provided an experience of pure indulgence and unparalleled hospitality.
