Welcome to the Luxuriate Magazine non surgical beauty series. There is so much we can do that is minimally invasive yet still yields amazing results. In these features, we will explore a range of treatments from fat freezing to laser hair removal for men, women and everyone in between. Our first port of call: Whiter teeth.
Teeth whitening expert Dr Rhona Eskander been trained by one of the UK’s leading cosmetic dentists at the Smile Academy and you may have also seen her on your TV. When it comes to smiles, she tells me that straight and white is still very much on trend, however, natural is also key so the Simon Cowell look is out for now.
The treatment I experienced was a Philips chairside whitening system which takes an hour and a half in total at the dentist. I met Dr. Rhona and Millie, an experienced and charming Dental Therapist. The room is very tranquil with relaxing lighting and music.
Its important that your teeth are clean before teeth whitening to maximise the results. I have super sensitive teeth and a phobia of the ultra sonic cleaner as it makes me jump. At SW1 Dental Studio they use EMS airflow polishing, a machine that cleans and polishes teeth with a mix of water, compressed air and fine powder particles with no sensitivity or pain. Instead you get a few salty granules in your mouth which I am totally fine with as a quick gargle fixes that.
After my gums and lips are isolated, the team then applied the Zoom hydrogen peroxide whitening gel which works together with the Zoom light to penetrate the teeth and break up the stains and discoloration.
The gel remains in place for 15 minutes while the light is activated. I can’t say its not boring but you can close your eyes, watch TV or even take a few selfies. The gel is applied for three 15-minute sessions of light activation. I am happy to report there was NO sensitivity as the Zoom light produces minimal heat, which is usually the source of discomfort. I did experience a little tingling which actually felt good as the process was working.
The result: As you can see, my teeth became a few shades lighter and instantly I could see the difference. Dr Rhona and Millie then made me some trays for my teeth so that I can carry on the whitening at home for a few weeks.
After care is really important. To help maintain the whitening effects of the treatment, I was advised to avoid smoking, tea, coffee, red wine etc. Its also really important to keep up your oral hygiene rituals (brushing and flossing) to prevent stains and plaque from reforming. Whitening toothpastes will also help maintain your results.
