If you ask women their number one skin complaint, you might find that dark and hollow under eyes is one of the most common answers. Whilst aesthetic treatments have come a long way, it’s only in recent years that targeted under eye treatments like Restylane Eyelight have become readily available.
I live and work in central London, and on any given weekday you can probably find me trying out one of the latest bars and restaurants that the city has to offer. With that in mind, combined with genetic factors, dark circles have always been one of my top beauty concerns, and something I’ve often tried to overcome. I’ve tried it all in the way of brightening products, rituals and treatments – from Vitamin C to retinol. Whilst some have worked better than others, I never achieved the rejuvenated and awakened look that I sought after, and so, I turned to a treatment that promises to fight the signs of a dull and tired complexion: Restylane Eyelight.
Tear trough filler vs. Restylane Eyelight – What’s the difference?
If, like me, you struggle with dark circles, you’ve probably heard of tear trough filler, an aesthetic treatment that involves injecting a dermal filler product into the under-eye area to combat hollow skin, fine lines and most importantly, dark circles. This is probably the most recognisable under eye treatment, though unfortunately, it won’t work for the majority of dark circles.
Tear trough filler works to eliminate dark circles caused by hollow under eyes – meaning that the treatment will only work on dark circles if they are caused by hollowness. This is normally the case if the eyes have a ‘sunken’ look about them, and if this applies to you, you are probably a good candidate for tear trough fillers.
If, however, your dark circles are caused by any other factor, it’s likely the treatment won’t give you the desired results. The most common causes of dark circles aside from hollow skin are genetics, pigmentation or simply changes that happen to our skin as we age – though of course numerous nights out with little sleep (and too much tequila) doesn’t help matters. If your dark circles are caused by any of the above factors, Restylane Eyelight is probably a more suitable treatment for you.
What exactly is Restylane Eyelight?
Restylane Eyelight is a targeted treatment that helps to diminish under eye shadows and smooth uneven skin. The procedure involves a small amount of hyaluronic acid being carefully injected into the delicate under eye area to achieve a brighter and rejuvenated look.
Who is Dr Munir Somji?

DrMediSpa – The Clinic
DrMediSpa clinics have two London locations – one in Knightsbridge, and one in Marylebone. I went to the Marylebone clinic on a Thursday afternoon, fresh faced – something that I never do due to my dark circles and uneven skin tone – and excited for the results of this shiny new treatment.
The clinic is ultra-sophisticated yet welcoming, and I’m greeted by staff who take my name and ask me some lifestyle questions prior to my appointment, before I’m greeted by Dr Somji himself. He takes the time to ask me my concerns and what I’m looking for from the treatment, and is open and honest about the expected results.
We conclude that my dark circles are indeed caused by genetic factors rather than hollowness, and so the Restylane Treatment is deemed suitable for me. Because of my naturally pale skin (I’m an avid fake tanner, and it’s not often I can be spotted with no tan on, so this is a rare occasion for me), I’m told it may take more than one treatment to achieve my desired results, along with other brightening treatments such as IV infusions or brightening facials. It’s refreshing to meet an open and honest aesthetics practitioner as opposed to one who will try to sell you anything and everything, and after some before and after photos, I’m ready to start my treatment.
Restylane Eyelight – The Treatment
I’ll admit I’ve always been conscious of any treatments involving my eyes. Whilst other dermal fillers don’t phase me, anything going near my eye area (or the surrounding vicinity), sparks a nervous feeling inside of me. Dr Somji carefully talks me through the procedure and puts my nerves to rest – though it goes without saying this is why choosing a qualified and experienced practitioner is so important.
Before the treatment commenced a topical numbing cream was applied to the area of injection, and to my surprise, the whole treatment was virtually painless. Dr Somji explained that most practitioners may choose to use a cannula, though he uses a needle for a direct and safer approach.

Restylane Eyelight – The Results
Post treatment, the results are immediate. Although subtle, my under eyes were visibly diminished and my skin tone looked dramatically more even – my late night the evening before was virtually undetectable.
For optimal results, Dr Somji recommends a course of treatments in combination with other brightening methods such as facials and infusions. As for aftercare, Dr Somji recommends to avoid touching the area for up to 6 hours post treatment, carefully washing the area with a cleanser and water and applying a yellow toned concealer to diminish any bruising. The clinic also recommends a follow up appointment where any further touch ups or advice will be given.
Restylane Eyelight – Is it worth it?
In my opinion, Restylane Eyelight is 100% worth it. In an age of never-ending beauty products, advice and treatments, dark under eyes are still a complaint that is hard to tackle. The treatment may not work miracles, but it comes pretty close – directly after the treatment my complexion felt brighter, lifted and more awake. No makeup days have become more frequent, and I can leave the house without my trusty Tarte shape tape to hand.
In a city like London, late nights are inevitable – but Restylane Eyelight does a pretty good job at helping to cover them up.
