Preventive dentistry. These two words can either cost us a lot or a little when it comes to our teeth. If we care for our teeth with effective flossing and brushing and keep a healthy mouth, it results in less dental treatment. Simple right?
I met Millie Bevan at SW1 Dental Studio for a hygiene session and Preventive dentistry. There are hygienists and there are Dental Therapists. Millie is a Dental Therapist who lives and breathes all things dental. Not only does she have a BSc in oral health science but since qualifying, Millie has achieved an ‘Outstanding Student Award’ from the British Association of Dental Therapists. She is also kind, patient and damn good at what she does.
I walk into the surgery and it feels calm and almost homely. Dr Leyland, Dr Eskander and team have also spent months reviewing everything they do and have created a gold standard of safety and patient care to protect against Covid-19. My favourite feature in every room was a clean air system that removes 99.99% of respiratory viruses including coronavirus.
Now, a professional scale and polish will remove all traces of both tartar and plaque which are major causes of gum disease. Another important thing Millie does is to help develop a better cleaning routine at home and actually showing me the best ways to floss and use interdental brushes.
Millie told me that a hygiene session should be like going to have a haircut. I like having my haircut but always had issues with the ultra sonic system of cleaning teeth as my teeth are super sensitive. So much so that once I had to have local anaesthetic injections before a hygiene session. Ridiculous I know, but never again…
Finally, a solution has arrived. At SW1 Dental Studio they use EMS airflow polishing, a machine that cleans and polishes teeth with a mix of water, compressed air and fine powder particles with no sensitivity or pain. I tensed up as I do normally gripping onto the chair bracing myself for that sharp shooting sensitivity pain but after a few seconds there was no sensitivity, no pain and it was so easy. Millie also told me about the benefits of EMS and here is why is it better:
- It reaches deep into periodontal pockets so cleaning is deep
- It is safe to use with dental implants, veneers, crowns and bridges
- Reduces teeth sensitivity because the tiny micro particles of powder can actually fill any exposed dentine and can also encourage the re-mineralisation of damaged teeth
- It doesn’t take as long.

Before an after BlancOne whitening
BlancOne
For the first time at SW1 Dental Studio, you can combine a hygiene session and a whitening treatment thanks to BlancOne. This in chair whitening gave me a whiter smile in only 10 minutes without sensitivity and around 3 shades of improvement. It uses a low concentration of carbamide peroxide (16%) and best of all doesn’t need gingival protection where your gums are isolated which can take up to 30 minutes.
A 45 minute hygiene appointment with Millie is £105.
